can anyone help with this problem.i have a mitchell 31 that is powered by a 120hp ford
the boat has a sealed deck with screw down hatches but the boat is open underneath with only one full bulkhead forward of the wheelhouse making it very noisy when steaming.
build extra bulkheads would be difficult around the machinery and related gear.
the lift off engine box is 20mm ply that is glassed over and has sound proofing fitted inside
but engine noise travels around under the boat and makes for an unpleasant time whilst steaming so bad is it that you cant hold a conversation in the wheelhouse.
any answers would be appreciated

Noisey fords

Think yourself lucky you have only got one, we have two, there are a solutions, 1 ear plugs, 2 climb up on the roof, 3 crash helmets with inter coms. 4 no talking till the engines are stopped, this one will concentrate the mind on the engine note and prevent untoward break downs. ( ours talk to me)

I don't think there are any easy fixes to this. An engine blanket can work OK, but you need to be wary of cooling. Boats have a smaller equivalent cooling capcity than a car, because the car engine is well wrapped with tin all around. Boats have nice big engine rooms, that allow a lot of radiated (air) cooling to suplement the water cooling. A blanket will change this. A large "box" with sound deadening may help, but this is easier said than done, and probably would not reduce the noise tranmitted through the hull due to vibrations. You could look at car type active engine mounts. These contain a shear fluid that stiffens up with increased hz. Works well on diesel cars, especially the heavy end of the engine/transmission assembly. However these are designed and spec'd to meet well understood vibration criterium that cost a fortune to measure and simulate.
Sorry, getting carried away with the techie bits, and not really helping.
