I have a Volvo 2000 series diesel.

The air intake seems to be very noisy, probably the workings of the valves.

It is metal and just has a metal gauze type innards after the trumpet bit.

Any ideas how I could quieten things down a without disturbing the air flow ?

Thanks in advance.

Most of the noise from the old Seagull outboard engine came from the carburettor air induction. Modern outboards have an inlet air silencer in the form of a box. Should be possible to devise something similar, you just need to make sure that the inlet area is not reduced. Otherwise you could get a length of big bore air hose, similar to those used on hot air heaters or vents and route it away from the engine compartment - say down aft below the cockpit floor. The longer the pipe the better the silencing effect. Flexible plastic hose would do fine.

AAAAAAAAAAARGH, make sure flexi pipe is reinforced with wire or as it ages it will doubtless collapse and end up wrapped round the inlet valve stems !!!
