I was planning a trip round the corner to the S Coast, but I am hearing stories the S coast is totally full ... (as a resuly the blighters are polluting the fabulous East Coast, but that’s a different story).

Is it true?

It rather depends on where you want to visit on south coast -I’m sure Eastbourne is very pleasant and might have space along with say Ocean village in Soton or port Solent in Pompey. Don’t forget that even when you arrive the eateries will all be full or suffering staff shortage closures .

Not even close to full, no. The problem though is that people are worried they won't get an overnight berth at a destination, so are not telling their home marina they will be staying away, meaning berths are not available despite marinas being full of empty berths. Due to not being able to book ahead you also won't be able to book a restaurant, although again people sometimes do and then don't turn up which leaves some restaurants unavailable yet not actually full.

If you anchor and cook on board it's fine, just don't turn up mid afternoon expecting to drop the anchor and stay in one spot. Anchorages are at bursting point during the daytimes and often spill into channels, but thankfully everyone goes home for dinner at about 5pm as if it's a work day.

Yes it's true; a chap called Luke wrote this in last month's YM:

Mary breathed a sigh of relief when she first caught sight of Cowes, as they sailed past the last of the crops to be harvested on the IoW. Mary and Joseph pondered the history of this little town, too insignificant to be numbered among Judah’s cities, and yet the birthplace of so many famous yachts.

Mary and Joseph found the marina to be crowded and worse, cribs were now charged at 500 shekels per zeret! They had no choice but to anchor in Osborne Bay and we can only imagine Joseph’s concern as he saw his wife suffering discomfort as the wakes of passing ships rolled their little boat.

Here, of all places would…………..

Well we are planning sail along the south Devon or Cornwall coast all next week. I expect the mouth of Plymouth sound to be busy and maybe the Fal. I expect to see maybe a dozen or so boats all day while making passage and most things going our way will overtake us.

I will expect to see a few boats anchored in the secluded bays but expect to need to book tables if I want to eat in restaurant or pub, but should ease a bit mid week. The harbours might not give us our prefered moorings but water taxi or inflatable will get us to store, pub or eatery.

Beyond the Hamble pit is it really so busy elsewhere?

I honestly don't know but back in June Fowey was said to be largely closed due to "staff shortages". I cannot think why.
