Actually, cut 50/50 with rubbing alcohol works well; I've never been able to get it to disperse properly in water.
If you can get Off!, that seems to do the job also.
Atually, after a moment on google I wonder if these are no-see-ums. Wikipedia says sand fly bites are large, the ones I am getting are small, about 10mm and dead itchy. Usually when I get bitten by a mozzie the bite is about 20\25mm across. Maybe they´re different mozzies, getting bitten during the day as well. Tried autan and repelex, both have deet but doesn´t say how much.
I'm surprised that Autan doesn't work. We've used the that for years in the Med/Caribbean with excellent results, and it smells nice too!
It's definitely been 100% effective so far as mozzies are concerned, though to my knowledge we haven't been munched by no-see-ums. Praps we didn't see-um! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
definitely Avon Skin-so-Soft for no-see-ums and sandflys/gnats. Neat as it is also a decent sunscreen and conditioner. They don't like it. Also in a spray form.
We currently live in Georgia where we have the worst sand gnats I have come across anywhere in the world.
Mossies & others? Jungle Formula. Available in spray, pump & wipes. Simply the best.
I almost wish I hadn´t asked now /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif All this stuff which everyone says works and is almost certainly unavailable in northern Brazil. Round here anyway. Never mind.
OK, for my twopenies worth, the no-sees are the worst, I put nothing on at all, but after living out here I seldom get bit. I probably DO get bit but it has no noticable effect. You can see two tourists, one will be covered in bites, the other no noticable difference. Some peeps have a sort of natural defence some dont, they are still bitten but it does not show. For a mozzie to bite you, it has to settle and deliberatly bite you, it takes time! usually this takes place when you are sleeping. The no-sees are the size of a pinhead, they can bite the minute they land. I can sit having a coffee in the morning and be bitten, I feel it, but it does not show. The worst culprits for bites are spiders, small Green or Yellow, disguised on plant leaves. They are quite toxic, your finger if bitten can swell up and be quite painfull, though no lasting effects. Two years ago I was bitten on the neck, my lymph nodes swelled up and I had to take a course of anti inflamatory pills , it took two months to recede, very worrying, could have been the big C. I know better now thankfully!
You can also try 'Cetirizine' hydrochloride. These won't stop the little buggers from biting but it does alleviate the itching. We take them on a regular basis when the mozzies are about and they work for us.
We get them at the supermarkets in the UK and they are a lot cheaper than Zyrtec.
Being ex army we always ate marmite EVERY day when in the tropics, it realy works as insects attack/bite the smell and as marmite is similar to Garlic in as much it oozes a smell through the skin. It is available in Brazil.
See if you can get hold of some citronella, or (even better) a citronella plant, and grow your own - this seems to work reasonably well, and has a nice smell.
And as an alternative to expensive 'After Sun' treatments, break off a branch from an aloe plant (add it to your garden on board?) and rub the jelly over your sun burn - helps also for itchy mozzie bites.
In that case you need the repellent the Venezuelan Warao Indians use, they live by the Orinocco which is mosquito central . Find an ants nest (not fire ants!!), grab a handfull of nest and rub it over your body. One hundred per cent effective.
"Off" - nothing better, it's expensive but only requires a squirt around the ankles so lasts quite a long time. Make sure your partner uses it too because the little blighters will be hungry due to yourself being off their menu and will be looking for the nearest alternative ankles to attack.
Cover body with ants you say..... Righto /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
Actually today wasn´t so bad, maybe I wasn´t using enough deet, covered in the stuff today. Smells strangly like Chaçacha....
Still not convinced now that they are noseeums, apparently there are little mozzies here which are active during the day and target ankles, might be them.
Cheers all anyway.
Hi, where abouts are you in Brazil. We are based in the North East, near Joao Pessoa. Most biting insects appear one hour before and one hour after dawn and dusk. We've tied all sorts of stuff including DEET. Most locals wear powerful aftershave, not dissimilar to Brutt 33 (if you can remember that). We find that to reduce the bites we stay covered at the 'biting times' If you do get bit, good old Germolene is brilliant. It has a local anaesthetic as well as antiseptic. The bites stop itching. We usually bring loads from the Uk, I haven't seen it in Brazil yet. I can't remember what the insects are called but they are very aggressive and bite on contact. All the best
