No power at Marsh lock

Yesterday around 5.30pm Mash Lock was on manual winding only. I know there has been lots of chat about manning etc but is this likely to be the usual routine for out of hours?

Also a big thank you (not) to the skipper of the very smart traditional launch that opened the gates on his exit just sufficient for him to squeeze through and then buggered off. I also know that on his way upstream earlier he had left ALL of the winding on both ends to another boat owner without any acknowledgement or thanks, chatting on his mobile throughout.

Ignorant arse - I wish I'd got the name of the boat and a photo. I will next time.

He was proudly sporting a blue ensign too.
 
Having a Blue Ensign Warrant neither indicates that the Wearer is a Gentleman nor a proficient Yottie. It merely shows that person is a member of an Organisation with the power to grant a Warrant. That could be Royal Yacht Club or even the Royal Navy Sailing Association whom have a wealth of members who did 2 years National Service which entitles them to join the RNSA and have a Warrant.

Having said all that my sympathies lay entirely with you.

Marsh should have been manned at 1730 yesterday as duty hours extend to 1800 hours this month. Even if unattended, public power should have been available so suggests a problem. Hand wind is definitely NOT the norm for out of hours.

One of the regulations concerning the wearing of a Blue Ensign states the vessel must be a least 7 Metres or two tonnes. Seems unlikely that a "Gentleman's Launch" would qualify?

Thats the main reason a lot of people join the CA...

The CA have cheapened their Defaced Ensign in no uncertain manner by their indiscriminate issuance of Warrants to all and sundry regardless of suitability. When I see it now I feel shame for that once prestigious organisation. I can't understand anyone wanting to fly that Ensign it now being nothing more than a degraded dish cloth with all and sundry knowing full well how you came by it.

Heartily agree, I'd sooner my boat wore a red ensign than that far too common CA defaced blue one.
 
Back to the original point . Can I suggest that the hand winding may have been due to the public power operation not being followed. Due to double manning the locks are put in public power but unfortunately some people believe that they can speed up operation by keeping their fingers on the raise sluice buttons. Some locks will stop operation if you keep your finger on that button. Hence hand wind. If you phone the number on the gate a lockie will be called out. I am aware of one lock that had 3 call outs in the last weekend for this reason.
 
I thought if you managed to trip the public power then nothing works?

It certainly it did when I did a test session when the system was new -
Perhaps somebody in EA took note of the report and took some action,
Of course nobody tells anybody....

Perhaps if all the locks operated the same on public power this would not be an issue, why is it that on some you only have to press the sluice button once and others you have to keep your finger on the button?
