No more drunken sailors

...The Navy make up for their sober habits at sea by keeping well up to old traditions when in port.
Drinking in port is entirely logical. You go to sea, you lose your land-legs and gain sea-legs. Back on land, this is inconvenient. The only way to reset the cycle is to get legless.

As for our ancestors, the "three-bottle men" of the eighteenth century who could routinely put away three bottles of port in a single sitting must stand head and shoulders above them all, if perhaps not for very long. And they were landsmen. Puts naval drinking of any era into perspective.
