I have a problem with my exhaust - there that got you. More importantly after a days sailing putting the engine on to come in past Portsmouth Harbour entrance there seems to be an air lock of some kind as no water appears an sod's law there is always something else going on to distract me from the guage . Why should this be? after stopping and letting it cool down , it starts and water appears but if I need to put the engoine on its because I NEED to put it on and I don't want to damage it. It has an anti syphon thingy , could this be the problem?

I had that with a Volvo MD7a - I changed the impeller and that helped but didn't fix it.

I think what happens is that the water is drawn out of the system by sailing along. Mine had no filter bowl the pipe went straight from the pump to the inlet in the leg.

The fix would have been the vetus perspex lid filter fitted at the right height.

It is always fun when the heat alarm goes off!!

Check/replace the paper gasket under the pump cover plate (and smear it with vaseline when replacing). The slightest 'leak' lets air in and the pump does not self prime, although no water leakage is evident. Unfortunately most suppliers of impellers are so mean that they don't include a new gasket with their £8 odd piece of rubber...........and we either don't remember, or are reluctant, to spend another £ or so on on a gasket worth 5p at most.
