Had a run round the back of Sheppey today on the jetskis. At one point we noticed a few fish jumping out of the water. We slowed down to take a look and we must have been in the middle of a shoal of small bass chasing baitfish. They were leaping out of the water all round us and one even hit my ski. Another possibility is they were trying to escape a seal that was lurking around but I favour the baitfish theory. Unfortunately none landed in the footwells.

Also had a run up Faversham Creek. Interesting place. The entry channel looks like it would be tight for a rowing boat so I was supprised to find loads of yachts moored at the end plus a few houseboats. Dunno how they got them in there. Can't put my finger on it but there was something about the place that reminded me of the film Deliverance:)

If you think that Faversham creek looks narrow you should try going under Havengore bridge and down the Roach. It looks quite wide, for a creek in the middle of the Essex countryside, until you meet a freighter coming the other way.

By the way it's nice to see a jetski user coming out of the closet, given the stick you guys get from most other boat owners. It goes to show that there's more to these craft than making waves and soaking sunbathers.

Expect they were trying to escape your jetski. There have been a lot round Kent in the last few years and are easy to catch, take a rod and some lugworm on the 'ski next time.

To get into Faversham you wait for a REALLY HIGH tide. We get up there occasionally with 7' draft, pushing mud most of the way. The barges don't draw as much as you might think, and if they get caught on the way out, well then sit back and take it easy until tomorrow. There's a lot of that in Faversham.

They were not trying to escape the skis as we were sat still with the engines off and they kept on jumping around us. I recall being told the Medway, etc. fill up with sprats at certain times of the year so perhaps that's what they were chasing. That would also explaing the lack of catches recently when fishing on the Medway, if the fish were all feeding on sprats.

I've got a telescopic rod that I keep forgetting to take with me. I've been meaning to try tying up on the old Herne Bay pier head and having a fish between rides. Perhaps I could take 2 and my daughter could have a fish from the doughnut :)

Jet skis

Just think! You could go up the Medway and buzz around among the yacht moorings with all the other jet-skiers whilst families are coming ashore in their dinghies, and STILL be more popular than Urs Meier.
