We were planning a trip around the South Coast. We sail with two dogs. We have hit a snag; a harbour on our route now refuses to allow dogs. We surmise this may be because of fears that some yacht owners may sail to France with their dogs. We are concerned that other marinas which are jumping off points for the Coninent may follow suit.

You'll probably find it's only Ramsgate and Dover. I've never had a problem further west.

There is always a possibility of being boarded by Customs around the SE corner so it would be a good idea to make sure you can prove where you've been, e.g. harbour dues receipts.

Straight from the horse's mouth, read it in Tom Cunliffe's South Coast Pilot and rang harbour. New by law started today!!

Having been to Ramsgate (more than once /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif ) I can confirm that there's a sign that you can not LAND dogs. (Years ago, when we kept the boat in Gillingham they had the same sign).

When I asked the marina office about this they said that dogs were allowed on the pontoons but could not be brought further than the gates at the top of the stairs. Quarantine regulations.

They also said that they could not enforce this.

That's probably the bottom line. As long as your dog has not left the country, there are no quarantine regulations that apply.

I suppose that they can ban them from private property, but if you choose to ignore it, it would only be a civll trespass so not much they can actually do about it.

I can confirm they are now banned having just spoken to them, we have been taking Albert there for years but they now say they have taken a hard line on this due to owners letting them run loose and failing to clean up after them.
Bugger.

Don't you really mean the crap owners who are so lazy and disgusting that they don't clear up after their dogs, giving us that do a bad name /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Some plastic bags do degrade, tesco's degrade over a few years so eventually there should be nothing left of them...

But I suppose there are a lot that dont provide degradable ones...

IN early september 2005 we contacted ramsgate harbour offices and got a quotation for a berth. Having not been to ramsgate for 25 years we decided to inspect the berth before taking are boat there we delt with a lady called janet wood we asked the question wether dogs were allowed in the marina she told us there was an old fashion by law but they didnt inorce it providing the dog was kept on a lead . we excepted te berth on that basis been there two years but have now been told we cant bring the dog to the marina. so we are paying for a berth we cant use because we cant go to the boat without are dog have reported this matter to the rya

Bit of a joke really, as nobody at Ramsgate Marina cleans up after the seagulls either.
