Got the boat anti fouled yesterday and as it was dark by the time we finished I shoved the rollers & brushes in a bag to wash at home.

Mon dieu ! this is messy stuff ! after trying to clean them in the kitchen sink it was every where - anti foul on my gloves then transferred to the sink, the draining board, the taps, the door handle, the dog...

As it was dark red I looked like I'd just comitted a rather gruesome murder!

"She" was obviously not very happy but I reassured her that there'd be no barnacles or weed in the sink...

So question is - do people chuck rollers / brsuhes after anti fouling or can they be cleaned ?

Yes, always chuck rollers, keep the trays and handles, we've got lots of them now as we buy new every year, "just in case". Doing an inventory yesterday prior to Gelshielding and antifouling, we have seven trays, four handles and nine new rollers of assorted sizes.

We usually keep one brush but don't clean it, put it in the remains of the antifouling and put the lid back on for "touching up". Apart from the four squares under the cradle supports at launch time, we have yet to "touch up" in 15 years of cruising. It's the little rituals that make cruising so enjoyable.

If you use kitchen foil over your trays they stay nice and clean....just chuck away the foil after use.......Roger wish you hadent reminded me it was that time of year again.....feel knackered thinking about it

Glad you reminded me.

My rollers are rock solid in the garage where I chucked them after last year. I must pop down to B&Q to get some more rollers before I start to antifoul next week, weather permitting.

I buy cheap brush and rollers and throw them away(after use) the paint tray I allways put in a plastic carrier bag then the antifoul ..when finished take tray out of bag and just throw the bag no need to clean the tray..also if I am going to continue with a paint/varnish job the next day I wrap the brush in cling film wich makes it unnecessary to to clean...if I do (very rare cos i hate it)clean a brush i use wash up liquid (dont wet it) and work the brush well with the liquid before washing...so there thats what I do.. if your intrested..if not sorry but ive said it now...Best let SWHTC do it anyway..

Roger has got anti-fouling all over his kitchen, Boatman keeps his used brushes in the freezer. Has anybody ever checked to see if there is a spate of mystery illnesses at this time of year?Micron on toast anyone?

This works for the Sunday roast as well. If you put foil in the bottom of the pan you can fold it up with the fat inside and throw it away.
Our house rule is that one cooks and the other one washes up so when my wife cooks and I wash up. And when I cook and I wash up.

Stick with Chineese takaways they come in foil to, the rule in our house is whoever rings and orders the takaway answeres the door to get, it then sits back. The other one opens the wine and chucks away the containers when we have finished....may sound like hard work but you soon get used to it....:)

Re: What she doesn\'t know!

Roger,

Clean the paint brushes in "her" cup, after washing the rollers in the sink finish them off in the washing machine, finally dry in the tumble drier.
She will never know, trust me!
Nice one.

I always throw the lot away, I even save a couple of pairs of old trainers and an old cap, with pair disposable overalls, the lot goes in the bin! Its a wonder you are still alive, I'm single, but I wouldn't have brought anything like that home when I was married!

If you don\'t want to chuck them away........

....it's also very possible. You simply slide the rollers off of the handle and into a glass jar. You then fill the jar with fresh water until the rollers are fully submerged, put the lid on and that's all! Next year fish them out of the jar by sliding the end of the handle into the hole and pressing. Flick the water off the roller and then roll it over something dry - old plank, harbourmaster's boat, your own keel - and you're ready to go.
I didn't believe it until I tried it.
It's O.K. for mohair rollers, not worth it for foam; some of these disintegrate anyway, depending on what A.F. you use.
The only problem I have found is discovering where the safe place that I put the jar LAST year has moved to THIS year.
