Reconsidering RPi use and may go back to Linux mini PC for OpenCPN. Not sure what options exist to connect this to NMEA2000.

Is Digitalyacht the way most go?

NMEA 2000 is CANBus, as used in cars.

If you look at the OpenPlotter raspberry pi variant which has OpenCPN and all the background tools required to interface it to NMEA 0143, 2000, OneNet plus other stuff like I2C thermometers, they have an add on board that has screw terminals for everything which can also have add on boards for compass, temperature, humidity, pressure and power control

MacArthur HAT | OpenMarine

Yes, I have a MacArthur Hat. Too integrated. Too hard to get good solid connections. Card too easily goes faulty. And Signal K is too confusing. I set it all up at home, put it on the boat where it worked, then later it didn't without any attention in between.

The project boat has a network and I am thinking about what to do on it. I used to have a fanless pc with just OpenCPN. That worked well. Replaced it with RPi with SSD and that worked well. Integration has its problems as I think I have tried to be too adventurous. Back to more simple systems.

Haven't,t seen that doc. Thanks.

Edit: Socketcan with Linux mini pc looks good to me. AIS and position will come from the SH VHF.

Ignore that message. It wasn't a SocketCAN adaptor. Found one which I think is.
