It gets better, almost...
I treated myself to a fun cube dongle USB RF receiver a while a go, I've got it running but the Pi with openplotter can't quite keep up, I can get it to record a wfax using linux SoX then decode on a laptop but there's always a few jitters so the image has those big 'jumps' in it.
Maybe shut a load of other stuff down when receiving might help, dunno.
Have you welcomed node-red into your digital life yet? So powerful and fast to get stuff working
And mqtt to throw data around, great if you can barely program like me
