NMEA 2000 T connectors

I feel like times are changing, as I said Raymarine are gradually accepting normal plugs too!

I don't think that's the case. They changed the connector on the MFDs to devicenet, but everything else is still STNG. So, if you buy a new Raymarine MFD and an autopilot, you'll need converter cables to connect your two brand new, shiny Raymarine products together.

but is that just the case because they've not updated the rest of the range yet? I kind of like those converter cables, they're small on one end which is handy!

No idea if they plan to change everything, but i somehow doubt it, STNG is a nice little earner for them.

Ok, so you've fitted your new Axiom plotter in a pod at the helm and you've plugged you £34 converter cable into it, where are you going to plug the STNG end ? Noting that the longest converter cable is just 1.5m. You could plug it into a T connector (£26), but that'll need terminating (£18). You can now connect a backbone cable (5m £42). Total cost so far, £120 and several connections.

Meanwhile, i fitted a Garmin MFD, whose whole systems comply with N2K and use Devicenet connectors throughout. I ran a 5m Actisense N2K cable which cost £33.95

If i need to poke N2K cables through small holes i use field installable connectors, so i only need a hole the size of the cable, even smaller than the STNG connector :)

Try giving Raymarine a call and complaining that you just spent good money on an MFD and a DST800 and your most unhappy that you have to pay for expensive adaptor cables, see if they'll send you a Freeby :)

They have to start somewhere, and if this means in a few years everyone ends up with the same connectors and network then that's a good thing. Garmin aren't all sweetness and light either, I've had all kinds of overpriced proprietary stuff from them over the years!
