Need to send Nmea 0183 AIS data onto the Seatalk Ng network to be read by an axiom plotter. Looks like there are several options : Actisense, Quark (which adds WiFi), Digital Yacht.....

What do people recommend for ease of installation and as 'out of the box' solution as you can get? They all seem to be similar money.

Cheers ?

Model is ngw-1 iso if your using seatalk NG there's a version that comes with an adaptor for NG and there's also a version that comes setup for AIS so that makes for a painless install

I used an Actisense unit to connect my 0183 GPS and AIS to the Seatalk system.
Dead easy. 100% successful.

If you intend to go AIS transponder in the future then some of the more costly (but still reasonable) ones accept 0183 inputs too and then send the lot to Wifi which is the next logical step for remote access via ipad/screen below.

The decisions soon start to get complicated!

Yacht Devices NMEA 0183 to SeatalkNG Gateway - YDNG-03R

Anyone used one of these? It seems a bit cheaper.

I haven't, but I had a look at the manual and it seems like a decent device. I like the configuration and diagnostic features. It should do what you need.

Unlike the pre-configured AIS version of the Actisense, you will need to change the NMEA0183 speed of the device before use, but that's quite simply done using an SD card and a text editor (eg Notepad on Windows).

Hi Rob

which one did you go for at the end?
I need to connect my AIS and standard horizon radio (both on NMEA0183) to my Axiom (NMEA2000), and I am seriously lost...

cheers

None of them.........yet! Ran out of time to fit one before the season started so now been bumped to autumn. Sorry that isn't helpful but I have had good feedback from others about the Actisense unit.

You have a couple of options

1. Buy two ngw-1 iso one normal one and one ais version and use those to interface your existing radio

2. Buy one ngw-1 and a new nema 2000 radio, not a huge amount more and a couple to choose from.

3. Consider an a new ais transponder with nema 2 k some will even output nema for the radio like the ais700 from raymarine saving you a extra converter.

4. If your using seatalk ng already then raymarine make an 0183 converter that will slot right in for the vhf (don't think it will do ais though)

Hope that helps

What is nema ? Is it a separate standard to NMEA? I've never seen any equipment that uses this standard.

Good spot...a spelling error....please though have a thought for those of us who are dyslexic and get our letters muddled sometimes before you post a sarcastic response.

Just a light-hearted tease....sorry. I've heard a number of commentators referring to the standard as "neema" in what appears to be a purposeful corruption of the acronym because it's easy to say.....winds me up a treat....more my problem than theirs..haha

You don't say what AIS you have, but if it's just receive you could fit a Standard Horizon GX2400, which has AIS, GPS and sends data over N2K or NMEA 0183. Costs about £430, as opposed to £340 for a pair of NGW-1s but you have a new radio and can sell the old one to offset the cost.

Or, i've been fitting Emtrak AIS transducers that have 0183, N2K, USB The basic 900 series B921 is only £400, not much more than a pair of NGW-1s and you gain AIS transmit.
