Has anyone ever done this? I may have to replace the cutless bearing carrier on the outside end of the sterntube due to damage. I will change the cutless bearing at the same time.

Here's the thing. The carrier has a stainless self tapper, screwed through the flange, into the deadwood top and bottom. Do I just remove these then put a stilson wrench on the assembly and unscrew it, or is there more to this? Too important to get it wrong.

Any advice appreciated.

D B Marine in Cookham-on-Thames changed the cutless bearing on my single engine Nimbus 320 two years ago, so I suggest you contact them as they should be able to answer your question.

I would also recommend changing the Volvo inboard shaft seal when the prop shaft is out, especially as Volvo recommend renewal every 6 - 7 years.

Cheers, Allan

They normally just unscrew once you have removed the two locking screws. May take a bit of effort as there should be sealant on the faces. I am assuming the screws just go into the deadwood and there is not a plate inside with nuts which is used on some boats.

Not too many replies so can I open the enquiry to ask if anyone has replaced the cutless carrier on ANY boat?
Just for clarity, here's a pic. Annotations by a surveyor.

FS, I would replace the housing and the bearing obviously
Did it on my old Nimbus 27
My stern tube had severed so I replaced everything
I got all the bits from T Norris Marine in Hounslow
Loads of advice and sensible prices
Google them, loads of good pictures of what you need and will give you a good idea of what you are facing
From memory (it was a few years ago) plus I can't find the pictures I took!
The 'self tappers' as you call them
I thought that 'fixing' was carp for a make like Nimbus
We (the yard and a mate) did a 'mod' again from memory we gelled in a threaded tube for want of a better description.
I need to contact said mate later today and I will speak to The Man at the yard too
PM on its way also!
