Today swmbo asked me what I want for Christmas. Ummm an 80 ft Sunseeker would be nice. Anyway after negotiations we have agreed to night vision monoculars. Iast your we took several trips late at night and to be honest lobster pots were in mind, thankfully not around my props. Can anyone recomend a good one. (I was going to say pair but no I won't) Are they worth two balls of blue or should I stick my heels in and insist in the Sunseeker.

Forgive my asking but why are night vision binoculars needed for identifying lights at night? I can understand the other things you listed, but I would have thought that lights would not need the equipment. (Unless the light has packed up!)

Just curious.

Joe,

To give you some idea, we use NV Goggles in aircraft and manage to see the strobe lights of aircraft going into Glasgow from Skye a hundred miles away. I guess they might be useful for picking up small channel marks, but NVG only give a monochrome image, so you would not be able to tell what colour the light is. Moreover, there is no depth perception when using NV binos.

The set we use cost £15k and are good, but I would be interested to see how well the cheaper "Leisure" sets perform. For me, a chart plotter and decent rope cutter would be better value.

on the north coast of Ireland lobster pots don't have lights and the walls on the Barr mouth have a stbd light 50 ft from the end of the wall. the lights also have a town behind them which make them rather akward to see.
