Very few people have been or will be in total darkness. One of the few ways to do it is go into a cave and get the guide to switch the lights out, you can't see your hand directly in front of your face. We did that in a cave system in Curacao where the escaped slaves used to hide. Even in the middle of the ocean with thick low cloud it's not totally dark.
