Offspring is due to head off on a CCF camp shortly. Can anyone recommend, from firsthand experience, a NV monocular, which is reasonably robust, small, and which will not burn out if she points it some tank's searchlight, please ?

It may seem a sneaky purchase, but I remember being told in training many years ago, that if you land up in an equal fight you haven't done your planning properly.

All I can say is that CCF camp has chnaged since my days.

Important thing was being able to steal coal from the NCO's bunker to get a fire lit to heat an increadibly cold Nissen hut at Cultybraggen.

Makes my skin itch - just like the hairy shirts we had back then

I know a fair bit about these gadgets. There are three generations of intensifier tubes in use. The 1st generation is cheapest but vulnerable to bright lights, there could be image distortion and gain may be low especially on cheaper models. Auxilliary IR lighting will improve viewing but give your position away if the enemy have nightviewing equipment. 2nd generation are better but more expensive and less vulnerable. 3rd gen will probably be too expensive.

1st generation will be 100-200 pounds
2nd will be 500 plus up to many thousands.

I have a couple of reasonable quality low gain viewers with IR illumination for 100 pounds if you are interested.

If you are thinking of buying a new NV device rather than s/h then I don't think you can get one which does not have an over load protection circuit which switches off the electronics before any damage is caused by a bright light shining on the front lens. I have sold a number of the Bushnell Prowler 4x50 and have decided to put one on my boat. There is a page of general information about night sights on my web site. Happy to take a phone call if you want to discuss this subject.
