Here's one for all you clever folk.

I'm trudging my way through 'A seaman's guide to the Rule of the Road' for my yacht master theory, and I'm on night lights and towing inconspicuous, partyly submerged vessel or objects etc.

Now it says, "Such a vessel or object, less than 25 metres in breadth, displays one all-round white light at or near the forward end and one all-round white light at or near the after end (except that dracones need not display the light at the forward end)."

What is a dracone?

Is it one of those things that I'm ever likely to encounter, a bit like the mine sweeper in operation that I have 2 miles off my port bow on a steady bearing that I have to keep 1000 metres away from on a regular basis in the Solent?

Sure it doesn't say dragons, as they have a big fire coming out the front! which you couldn't miss.

Thank you, I knew it was going to be vital to my understanding of the subject.

I'm sure there are going to be loads of other stupid questions as this course progresses.

Doing this I'm going to need that wine box, so when I next see that combination of lights I'll have to have a closer investigation.

I'd have to really unlucky to meet a Dragon in the Solent, I thought they were only found in Wales.

Thanks Julie, currently they're all weird ones, but I hope I can start making sense soon. I think I've decided that pilot lights are dressy white dinner jackets on top with red trousers, ie airline pilot, whilst fishing boats wear red jackets to hide the blood, with white trousers like a butcher, yes, gross, but I'm not going to forget. Does anyone else have any other useful acronyms or ways of remembering these things?
