Nice old port

Just back from a few days in Nice (land-based) and as usual was drawn to the harbour and marina(s) but found a fairly new industrial aggregate handling plant right at the land end of the harbour cutting the link between fine old buildings and the harbour; destroying any attractiveness that the area may once have possessed. Is there are nice area with waterfront restaurants and bars farther into the marina area and does anyone permanently berth there or visit by boat. Still plenty of superyachts lying idle so the place must have some attraction, or perhaps just Nice town itself which is a good place for a few days break.

I've been in by boat many times but not this season, so wasn't aware of the industrial installation. Where is it exactly? South, north or east side? Surely there are still the restaurants etc as before on the marina (east) side? (Nothing to write home about though)

TBH, if I had a spare hour or two there I'd jump in a cab and go to Villefranche water front and get lunch or coffee there (Mer Germaine restaurant being the top choice). Much prettier.

Cab! Licenced thieves. No 100 bus for €1.50. For either Villefrance, Beaulieu, Eze, Monaco and on to Menton.

The works in Nice have been going on for a while. It's at the western end.

It's along the northern end of the port, and certainly is an eyesore, although I thought it was a construction project rather than a permanent handling plant. You can see it on the webcam as it pans around the port http://www.neos360.com/CCINCA/port_de_nice/

I've always found the port area a bit grotty anyway, so have always taken the short walk into the lovely old town.

I am not sure but maybe the construction work relates to the extension of the tramlines to the port area.
Yep, I try to avoid cabs wherever I travel - bus 100 or train to Monaco is a much cheaper option . The train to Monaco
costs approx 3.5 euros - quicker and more comfortable than the non aircon bus.

Got one of the old trains on Tuesday from Cannes to Beaulieu, no aircon for 55 warm minutes. 100 Bus are aircon'd. Your right though trains faster. Next year will get a ZOU card for 1/2 train fares on the Paca TER.

As you said it's a port which any major city by the sea has and it is commercial port ,without the industrial side there would not be a port to visit ,the old town would not be there without the port imho .

Could be done without destroying the place. Imagine a Tesco distribution depot right along the front of Torquay marina!

You probably saw (how couldn't you) the concrete plant used for the tram extension works. It will be gone in a few months (spring 2017). Imho the new tram line is a blessing in disguise as you'll soon be able to reach most interesting parts of the city in no time from the vieux port. In the meantime, endure the view
