Had a little exploratory trip to this camp site in our little Motorhome to check out the great Ouse. Just had a little paddle up the river but it looks a nice location for those who know how to work locks. Here is a little video of our trip

Just up the road from me, the campsites at st.neots and houghton are good locations too, the locks are no bother as long as you have an EA key and a handle.
That said now I'm broads based I don't miss the locks at all.

Thanks for that information. I just fancied a little meander up the Ouse from there in our little Sib (or tender to most people on here would call it). I had a look at the lock in Godmanchester and it looked daunting but I guess when you have done it once it is all ok. I just phoned Jones boatyard and they were very helpful regarding the Keys. Apparently a licence is about £11 for 7 days which is very reasonable.... I wonder if many people bother with the licence not that I am worried about £11
 
Nice video, grew up in godmanchester, Houghton well worth a visit ,there is a small camp site by the lock, Pike and eel at Needingsworh has a small marina ,Ferry boat at Holywell worth a look nice village
 
Just bought a lock windlass handle from EBay for £11 delivered. Then a key next so should soon be good to go. Just got to understand her to do the locks lol
 
There's instruction boards on them, it's fairly logical but there is a delay built into the electric guillotine gates that doesn't start counting till you raise to a certain level so take the gate up till the clock on the panel starts counting down (the gate will stop automatically) and back it down a bit if too fierce, the delays seem to take forever, it was much quicker when it was all hand winding.
I doubt many bother with a short term licence as there's very few patrols unlike the broads.
If you find yourself in st.neots there's a great little pub lurking in a back street in the town called the ale taster, you won't get anything run of the mill but some cracking beers and "the fridge of doom", a rare pub where you can get decent stouts and porters all year not just in winter.

Many thanks for the information but we tend not to frequent pubs anymore. Used to a lot but not now. In my opinion they are trying to price themselves out of the market £5.00 for a pint simply aint worth it
 
Buy a licence, otherwise how will the locks be maintained as navigation funding is very tight. Also you won't get prosecuted which will happen if you're caught, unless you don't mind having a record.
The river Nene is also very scenic, so you could do worse than have a look at it.
 
Yes will buy a licence. I agree the Nene is lovely. We have canoed on it a few times. Here is our little trip in 2021
