I've just had to renew my ICC, which will be repeated every 5 years. It cost me a cheque for 40 quid plus photo and stamp. There was no question of retesting. The service was prompt which makes the suggestion that I should pay an additional large sum for prompt service also seem a racket. I cannot imagine that the time taken at the RYA to process this transaction was more than five minutes. I find this charge outrageous.

I wouldnt go so far as to say it was outrageous! It works out at 8 squid a year thats all, I also have had to renew mine, I am a member so of course its free to me.
I think its worth it (to me) I can hire a jet ski, hire a speedboat up to 10 metres, plus power up to 24 metres and sail up to 24 metres.
Plus in Greece I need it for over 30hp and for insurance. I have not got much choice really, but for the price, its no probs.

On the other hand

I, as an RYA member, think the price is totally justified and see no reason why I and other members should have to subsidise tight-wad non-members, who like to use that which we (the members) have supported during the 5 years the OP hasn't needed to renew his ICC.

IMHO the renewal price should be £195 (being 5 years membership fees).

Charles,

Since the mandarins of the RYA eagerly wanted to take on the role of "National Boating Regulator" - seemingly without any regard for the expense to it's members - for whatever reason - could you explain why it is OK for another organisation (Ofcom) which runs the radio licensing to now make only a one-off charge?

Does the RYA have a monopoly on issuing these things in the UK?

And it's exactly this bigheaded, arrogant attitude - that seems to prevail throughout the RYA - that puts tight-wads, such as myself, off from joining.

Too right. Why should non-members - which includes people who have made a conscious decision to be non-members - be forced to subsidise this bunch through exploitation of a monopoly? If a government department behaved in this way the RYA would complain about it.

Oh eck. Hang on - I'll see if there's room left in my mouth for the other foot

I was an RYA member once

but found I was not, as a cruiser, getting what I considered value for money. I remain of that opinion. I also feel that 40 quid is a very high price for renewing the ICC. In my opinion this not a fair cost for the work done but a large part of the money is my unwilling subsidy to that organisiation.
