next year\'s cruise

I'm beginning to get itchy feet already about where to go next year. Last year we tried ostend - robert is worth the 12 hour crossing alone - can anyone suggest a similar option from the Orwell of good value?

More of the same? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Morgana seems to quite like Nieuwpoort
Full Circle waxes lyrical about Gravelinnes
And I've been told Holland can be nice - but I wouldn't know as I don't go/stay there for religious reasons.

If you've got a bit more time on your hands - Normandy's quite nice.
Been there twice in six years - intend to go again (probably the next time we don't quite get to the Channel Islands /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif )

Re: next year\'s cruise

I am thinking of going to Holland.

I want to find out the best time to go.
I fancy doing the "mast up" route to Amsterdam.

Only got 2 weeks max to do it.

Re: next year\'s cruise

Nice relaxing cruise up the Thames as far as oxford, SWMBO wont get seasick, can see London from the river at night, stop at friends flat in st Katherine's to do a bit of London, cant wait. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

if you want to do the mast-up it might be better to go to Ijmuiden first a better wind angle going than comming back. mast up via Haarlem un less u want to do the night pasage through Amsterdam

Oh yes, they do!
We've been there once (2005) - and by boat too /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Mind you, we were hoping to get to La Coruña at the time /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
We never get where we plan to go. So lot's of planned holidays to Holland on the horizon. Worked like a charm this year. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: next year\'s cruise

Am looking at getting down to Dieppe / St Valery sur Somme for a brisk week in May. All depends on if solo or have crew and of course the weather - so a week in Ramsgate it is then!

Only trouble is the date I want to leave is our 22nd wedding anniversary so not sure that is going to be a good choice!

Then 7 June I plan a week into the Medway and up the Thames.

Otherwise it will be just weekends and a family holiday in a caravan somewhere - oh joy!

Re: next year\'s cruise

Wow, you lot start planning early. I rather fancy going over to Holland, and if I can find willing crew, that might be on for next year. As it is quite a long way in a small boat, it would be re-assuring to cruise in company, so if anybody is planning a trip in that direction and has available dates, I might see if I can get crew for those weeks.

Roger

Could you clarify your statement.
Is Holland Out or is it when you go there?
When are the Dutch school holidays.

Got a week at Le Mans mid June so I don't thing I could go at the end of June.
I may get away with mid July.
Guidance appreciated.

Re: next year\'s cruise

Bernie, the 21st Colne Ostend rally will be taking place end July/early August, normally about 18-25 vessels participating, start time is staggered so virtually everyone is in site of at least a couple of others, during the crossing.....Not unusual to have a few boats joining in from the Orwell! (around about N.E Gunfleet)We go to RYCO for for a meal on the Sat night. so sail on the Friday! if you are interested let you have more details when available.

Re: next year\'s cruise

Bernie,

Into Holland via Vlissingen, into the Walcheren Canal, perfect for exploring Zeeland, and excellent for 'Jacht' spotting.... plus a good distance for a 2 week cruise... we've done it both of the last 2 years for a fortnight each time, and still plenty to see!

Bernie
Many of Wallet - Ostende rally participants move up into Holland at the end of the w/e using the rally as a start of the holiday. Full details will be posted on the Wivenhoe sailing club site nearer the time. WSC usually aiming for middleburg as the first stop. That's how I did my first trips.

Re: next year\'s cruise

Bernie,

According to the provisional timetable we received a few weeks ago, the Shotley Point club are planning a cruise to Holland next year. Last couple of weeks in June - calling at (IIRC) Ramsgate, Dunkirk, Gravelines, Ostend, Blankenberg and Middleberg (some on outward, some on return) with about 5 days planned in the Veerse Meer & surrounds.

If you're interested, the club are a friendly bunch (a number of members keep their boats at Levington).

info here

cheers

John
