we are planning to head downstream this weekend, as we haven't been pass Windsor way since we bought our boat from Penton Hook 4 years ago. The plan is to take advantage of the MDL free berthing and moor up at Penton Hook for a few nights.
I plan to leave Bray marina on Friday afternoon at about 4 - 5pm depending how quick I can get out of work, and then head down to Penton Hook that night - I am assumimg that it is about a 3 - 4 hour journey to Penton from Bray?
The next day we want to travel up to Teddington lock before turning around and staying back at Penton Hook for the saturday night.
Not knowing that area at all, we would ideally like to moor up somewhere on saturday lunch time and have a nice pub / resataurant lunch, maybe around the teddington / Hampton court area? So anyone got any suggestions of places to moor up down there, and decent places to eat (gastro pubs / restaurant type places).
How long will it take to get from Penton to Teddington lock? We will be in no rush to get back to penton hook on the saturday night, as we really want to spend the whole day enjoying that area by boat.
Any tips or advice from people down there would be appreciatted.

Lunch mooring

There are a few good places in Hampton Court, if you can find a mooring space. Further up stream you have the Anglers and then through Sheperton there is the Thames Court which gives you a pleasant short hop to Penton for the night, or I would rather have a light lunch at Hampton Court, and a big dinner at the Thames Court and stay overnight there.

When do you need to be back at Bray. If you have the time I'd recommend an overnight at Hampton Court to give yourselves enough time to have a good look around as well as a leisurely meal. The Palace and gardens are pay to enter although part of the gardens are free. Just across the road from the Lion Gate (near the maze) is Bushey Park.

The Kings Arms by the Lion Gate has always done good grub although the ales can be iffy sometimes. Ok though if you're not an ale drinker!. Across the road from there to the left is La Fiamma, Italian restaurant which is open all day (grab a table at the back where the windows overlook the park). Near the bridge is Blubeckers and the 4* Mitre Hotel. Go across the bridge and bear right you've got several pubs, plus Indian, Chinese, Italian, French eateries and others.

If you're short of time and can't do an overnight at Hampton Court, personally I'd save Teddington for another trip as the leg from HC to Tedds and back will take a bit of a chunk out of your day.

anybody been here. Seems to have good reviews and looks like it is by the lock

I'm sure Mr. Shead will be along shortly to enlighten you - I believe it's his 'local" :D

Apollo may also suggest that 'you must be loaded' if you can afford places like that :D

Why the rush to get back to PH on Saturday night ? Stay overnight at either Tedders or Hampton Court would be a very pleasant plan. Lots of restaurants on the Molesey side of Hampton Court Bridge and a very good italian on the main road just the other side of the palace from the barge walk moorings.

we want to stay back at penton hook on the saturday, so that we don't have to much of a journey back to bray on the sunday. Sounds like teddington might mean a long day, so we might just go as far as hampton court. Just looking forward to exploring a new part of the river.

The stretch between HC and Teddington at weekends can be full of pleasure boats, hire-by-the-hour row boats and put-puts, rowers by the dozen, and there's a couple of dinghy racing clubs too. 2 - 3 hours lost there and back isn't that unusual, apart from being frustrating after a while trying to dodge everything that floats.

The EA moorings on the Surrey bank at Shepperton are a very short walk from The Minnow and The Old Crown. Not been in the Minnow but there is a beer garden out front. I was warned off the Minnow by a local last year who enquired as to the date of our lottery win! There is a post on the riverside restaurant thread extolling its virtues however. Can recommend the Old Crown from personal experience, beer garden is in the back

Staines is easy enough in 3 hours, and has plenty of choice.

Use the little metal moorings just above the bridge on the starboard side, it's quiet and free, or the Swans moorings if you're a patron!

The public mooring outside the slug and Lettuce is OK, but a bit noisy until late. Not a big problem, just go out and make some noise!

Laleham mooring is small, quiet and has a few pubs within crawling distance.

We'll be down that way, would be nice to see you for a drink....:D

(Plan is Staines on Saturday night, Windsor for Sunday morning)

Many times I simply went downstairs ...

It's good but the wine will get you. Expect over 100 quid for two taking it easy. Otherwise head up tedd high street where there are more restaurants than you can shake a stick at. Or walk over bridge to broad st for several more ! There is something for every budget. Pm me if you find any that look good and want a review !

probably only going as far as hampton court, so will do teddington another time. I have been looking for restaurants around hampton court, are most of them in what is called 'east Molesey' - don't know the area and just want to make sure I am heading in the right place. Are most of the pubs and restaurants south of the river so to speak or on the side where the palace is (ones with walking distance)?

East and West Molesey are just up the road, Hampton Court proper is literally across the road from the Palace on the Lock side of the bridge (it will be obvious when you pass through the lock down stream all the restaurants are on the right)

To moor head downstream, under the bridge and look for a mooring on the left, you will be unlucky NOT to fine one.

Then walk towards the bridge, turn left over it, cross the road and bobs your uncle.

There are plenty of places to eat there from Pizza Express, Indians and other brassiere type places. As well as a good few boozers.

If you have time the Palace is always good for a look, so good in fact my folks got married there...

And if you bump into a mad blonde 30 something women called Leilah....steer clear....

Have fun

Heading downstream, leave Molesey Lock, go under Hampton Court Bridge and the public moorings are a couple of hundred yards down on your left, right outside the Palace on what's known as Barge Walk. Can't miss them and very good moorings.

On that side of the river you have La Fiamma

http://www.lafiamma.co.uk/

To get there just walk towards the bridge from the moorings, take the gate on the right through Hampton Court, passing the front of the Palace, and just keep going more or less straight on. You'll exit Hampton Court near the maze at either the Lion Gate or the one next to it. Fiamma is to you left on the opposite side of the road. At the Lion Gate is the Badger pub, The Kings Arms.

The other restaurants on that side of the river are by Hampton Court Bridge (Blubeckers, another I can't think of, and the posh Mitre Hotel right on the waterside.

Cross Hampton Court Bridge and that's East Molesey where you have numerous pubs and just about every cuisine you can think of. There's a useful mini-mart there too.

Fiamma I can recommend. Been there a long time, family run, open all day and I've never yet had a bad meal there. Tables at the back look out across Bushey Park and you can often be entertained by the deer in the park while you eat. I'll be there on Tuesday :).

Plus one from me for La Fiamma.

OTOH the walk over the bridge is not very far and there really are quite a few eateries over there as Wavey says.

Over the bridge at Hampton Court on Bridge street is a very nice French Bistrot called Le Petit Nantais. Went there a couple of weeks ago for my birthday and absolutely superb, best fillet steak I've had in ages, not to mention the lobster! Plenty of fresh fish on the specials as well, the chef/ owner does regular trips to Billingsgate to get some lovely fresh seafood, my favourite in the area, and in general really... Minnow in Weybridge is another faerie, more a dining pub really, but food has been very good when I've been, and The Old Crown is also very nice, specialising in fresh fish, albeit a small simple menu, but very well done and a nice sun trap beer garden as well. Anglers in Walton also very good and nice moorings usually out the front, or about 50 yards up river. Hope you have a great time!
