Is it me, or has photo posting changed?

Re: I want one!

"next door" is a Humber barge, circa 1920. She is lovingly maintained by our neighbours and was converted to liveaboard some time ago. They once moved into their shed and the river flooded. In Tony's words "I've lived on a boat most of my life and when I moved onto the land it sank".

The other boat is a Dutch barge dating from 1884. Another liveaboard. Ahead of them both is another Dutch boat. I do not kow her age as she was shipped over recently and I haven't got the detail yet. Nice though!

Re: I want one!

p.s. to the top left of the photo that Ramage rescues is the old chain ferry that connected Church Island o the mainland for carrying heavy loads. Abandoned but never decomissioned.

the old chain ferry

I've often wondered about that vessel!

I used to live on Trowlock Island at Teddington, served only by a chain ferry (none of this posh bridge stuff), I shall go and have a closer look.

So if not decommissioned, presumably you can still use it? Why has it got a wheelhouse?

Re: I want one!

It has been left to rust. Don't know about the wheelhouse. Church Island has an interesting modern history. It was owned by a wealthy Greek (ahem) who wanted to turn it into a victorianesque development. All of the house plots still have Greek names on the registry, though none of them are used. His vision was a place with nice pathways and steel street lamps. I understand that he pulled out early and the last remaining testament to him is this mooring ... though that belonged to someone who bought proprty from him.

Re: I want one!

Also seem to remember that bit of river ahead of those magnificent vessels, round the left bend, is bloomin shallow /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Lovely spot though. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good point! The Humber barge gets through no problem due to the low draught... I can only assume the same will apply to the Dutch one.

Re: I want one!

Ive spent many an evening and night at that mooring ( the park ) Great spot . Whats the deal with the guys on the end having huge fires ? I assume they are army as the boats are named bosnia and the like . I wanted to join in as they seem to have a great time but wasnt invited /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: I want one!

The guys, and gals, on the end are a grand bunch of people. I did get an invite, courtsey of Gavi, and I tell you, you havn't lived until you've sampled chicken a la Church Island.

Re: I want one!

They have a party every now and then and it tends to involve a big fire. Geoff's visit coincided with Greenwich Yacht Club's annual visit to Church Island, which is probably what was happening when you were moored nearby. We get a little invaded by boats of many shapes and sizes! Nice bunch of people.

Re: I want one!

Amazing, she must have dredged her own channel. I only draw about 2ft, and most of that is the outdrive leg, yet had to get a couple you on the bow to get through.

Re: I want one!

Yes, get No Regrets to go before you......

an old Broom still sweeps clean!
