Congratulations to the NT for taking action to solve the overcrowding problem at on of the UK's most attractive anchorages. I picked up a buoy there afternoon for at lunch stop. I had barely switched off the engine when the harbour master came alongside and relieved me of the princely sum of £15 for my 31 ft boat.

Has been the way for years. You pay for the mooring buoys, but anchoring is free (but they do ask for a donation, which I think is fair to give them £5 or £10 for overnight).

I was there last weekend only 6 boats in total , bliss. Saw a pair of sea eagles and at least 6 seals. All for free. Best get there when it's cold and windy because it won't stay that way when the sun comes out, then it's better off dropping the hook outside the entrance

So was I, there was a seal basking on the mud bank as I rowed down to Shalfleet. Lovely spot when it's cold but I reckon that'll be the last weekend there for a while - as the temp increases, so do the hoards of sunworshipping boaters.

How very polite, sun worshipping boaters , indeed

You’re not wrong there. It costs them nothing to not build on the land, the the whole point of a trust is to remove other financial burdens. They are literally adding no value, just a price tag.
Why don't you ask the organisation what they actually do to maintain and enhance the site rather than claim they do nothing. Nothing to do with being a Trust - that is just a legal form. The money to maintain the site has to come from somewhere and the only source of income is their maintained mooring buoys and voluntary donations which you can avoid if it offends by becoming a member.

I don’t need to ask the organisation anything, it’s all there for us to see. You can disagree with me, that’s fine, if you think they are adding value that’s great. I don’t.

Another way to look at it perhaps is that by voluntarily contributing to those eminently reasonable charges for that part of the world (!) it goes into the pot that maintains rather a lot of other NT stuff too? Goodness knows, someone needs to….

I expect to be harassed by chuggers in the high street on a Saturday, it's just a shame we can't get away from them in a formerly idyllic and unspoiled anchorage.

I don’t consider it reasonable to require me to subsidise other people visiting other places at all. I do enough of that through my taxes!

They ask for a donation though.

Join the NT - I understand it is free then!
I believe they have stopped doing this...
It's not about the facilities. It's about the NT keeping the place as it is so that you can enjoy it.
It's about the national trust making money and they're own agenda.

It's cheaper to buy membership than pay entrance to visit one of there properties, the reason is a they know most members will forget and not participate in any of the votes or decision making for the NT.

Leaving a small number of opinionated people with far too much power.

These are the people who changed the use of Beatrix Potters farms because they where not making ENOUGH money.

Go speak to the boat yard at Shalfleet ask there opinion of the national trust,
ask a Lakeland farmer,
ask the countryside alliance,
"We're no longer issuing licences for any trail hunting activities, including the exercising of hounds. We're only licensing drag hunting – all other forms of hunting will not be licensed on National Trust land."
They just decided over bought what they wanted.

Ask cavers who's access to caves on there lands is being restricted.

If the national trust is about preserving it should include activities as well as places.

As I tell the guy when he asks for money for anchoring, I don't give to criminal gangs.

I loved the story that at one time Newtown ( which used to be called Freetown acc to wiki ) was identified as a usefully remote and poorly populated site with adequate water to build a spiffy nuclear reactor!

Reckon they’d have to pay people to come and anchor then 😄

I’m happy to bung em a goodly few beer tokens and grateful for the unspoilt, undeveloped beauty of the place
