Can anybody remind me whether they charge you for anchoring in the harbour at Newtown Creek on the Oyl o' Woyt.

Cheers

I think you'll find its National Trust property - including the river bed so they do have a right. I dont mind paying those sorts of prices if it means you get a stunning anchorage and the money goes to maintaining the area.

According to the Warden last time I asked, the only concession for NT members is 'short stay anchoring free' ... not overnight. But of course he doesn't collect the fees till evening anyway. Have tried to verify this at several NT information points, to no avail. Nothing in the Handbook. If the free anchoring applied overnight, I would have joined just for Newtown.

I have a vague feeling that last time I was there I paid half price for an overnight anchoring as a NT member.

Funny, I wasn't going to mention the half price until someone else did.

Be careful if you go ashore there. Last time I was there (last August) we had an excellent dinner at the local pub only to come back to find some yobs trying to steal our tender. Told the harbour master the following morning who let us off the overnight mooring fees!

Unfortunately there is little evidence of maintaining the area. As recently as 12 years ago you could land a dinghy on the sea wall and walk to the boathouse - alas no more. It is only a matter of time before all the silt behind the collapsed walls start to silt up the whole creek and it will once again return completely to nature - much as Pagham has done. Come on National Trust - you take our money do something with it!!
Incidentally, how do you know you're on National Trust Proprty?? - Because there's "Keep Out" Signs everywhere!!
