Hi All,

Does anyone have any experience of Newhaven and its Marina (in the charmingly-named Sleepers Hole)? - I'm wondering if it's worth an overnight stopover as a change from Brighton.

Many thanks :)

Well worth it indeed, it's a quaint, slightly run-down place, the opposite of Brighton. It is run by a very friendly down to earth couple. If you are deep draughted, mention it and hold out for a spot near the main river or you will be in the mud at LW.
Step out of the marina and walk up the hill to the old coastguard station, visit the historic fort built in to the hill side. There is a sheltered sandy beach inside the breakwater which would be a choice anchorage, but the HM won't allow it sadly.
Walking towards town, there is a mini supermarket and a reasonable chandlers close by, also a speedboat dealer and a dive shop, and the lifeboat station.
Continuing towards town, there is a genuine fishing port, the atmosphere like a little bit of Fleetwood or GY.
The actual town is not prosperous unfortunately.
Twice a day (?) you will have a close view of some tight manouvering by the Dieppe ferry.

It's a really characterful place. You are meant to call the HM on VHF to enter, but it's relatively informal compared to eg Dover, and rough banter may be heard on the channel...

So yes don't miss Newhaven, cheers Jerry
edited to add, Littlehampton is well worth a visit as well, with a different set of attractions..

I don't disagree but I also remember it being very noisy during the night( Ferries loading and unloading ), the recycling plant isn't pleasant. On a positive note, take look at KTL, no 3 or thereabouts. A good real time video of entrance into Newhaven and Dylan's comments. It's worth a look. Thanks. Alan
