A recent thread is on here comparing a particular Cat engine, to a Volvo. I don't want to high jack that thread, so I will start a new one.

Our previous Sea Ray had Mercruiser, 8.1 gas - very solid engine. Our new boat has the Volvo D6, 370HP turning DPH drives.

Too be honest, I always figured our next boat would have either Cat or Cummins Diesels. But, this boat came along that the Admiral and I really liked, so we ended up with Volvo power plants.

It was my understanding that Volvo marine engines (and their drives) 10 years ago were not the best, but in the last decade or so this has changed, and they are on par with the aforementioned US engines. I live in the U.S., so I am surrounded by mostly US built engines, but many of the newer boat models coming here now have Volvo.

Since this board appears to be mostly European based, I was hoping for some input comparing the new Volvo D6 to the similar HP Cat or Cummins that are on the market? Just flying at 30K feet, to get some general feedback on the positives and negatives of these new engines.

Personal experience;
12 years of owning boats with the 5.7 small block V8 ( GSi/ GXi) ; virtually faultless reliability.

1 season with a D4; less than I engine hours due to problems with the EVC system ! OK, EVC is also used with "gas" engines, but its mandatory on the diesels !

If you have just bought your D6 and drives new you should be ok now as most of the gremlins have been ironed out by the factory, if it's an older one there are many posts on here about D6 and drive problems relating to.

Leaking steering Rams, corroding props, failing trim and steering hoses, leaking intercoolers. Leaking heat exchangers, heat exchangers blocking up, leaking strainer lids, corroded mounts, failing exhaust horns, failing plastic pulleys, change of belts material, God im bored now!!!!

Thanks Paul. I have read some of those past posts.

I also purchased extended warranties (takes the drive and engines to 5 years) to help with any gremlin attacks.

I don't normally buy extended warranties on anything, but considering the investment, and the fact I am in salt 365, I figured it was a good investment.
