I have recently aquired a sterling boat with an outboard Johnson vr60. As I have never taken it in water and my knowledge is very limited. I have been adviced to ask if someone can come with me in water to give some tuition. Based in West Yorkshire willing to travel to Lake District or somewhere.

If you go on to the RYA web site they list all the schools that teach the PB2 by areas. when you find them, give them a call and have a chat about your requirement, they should be happy to talk you though what will help you to get out and enjoy boating.

Works out cheaper if you do it in your own boat, plus you may be able to get your partner / family member(s) qualified at the same time for the same fee.

I think this makes more sense if we can get someone to take us so a few of us can get trained. Is this PB2 necessary? if not then we can get someone who is good to take us out and get the knowledge that way.

PB2 isn't "necessary" in the sense that you have to have it before you can go out on your boat...

But having someone take you out in some structured way ensures you cover all the points and can go back over anything that needs more attention (and allows someone with knowledge to assess how you handle the boat).

Once you have that then you will feel confident to take the boat out and that way gain further experience. There will always be people around to ask and willing to give advice. Some will give advise whether you ask for it or not!

Hi Faxi,

You can just take your boat out with nothing at all in the way of qualifications or experience. Would it be wise? Well... lots of people get away with doing just that and muddling along. There are also a few tragedies every year.

Going out with someone who knows what they are doing would be fine and they could show you most of what pb2 covers, especially if you start on the lakes. It's probably wise to do the pb2 at some point, though. The safety side of boating is something that some people ignore and others take very seriously. It's not just life jackets you need to think about, either.

It makes sense to read up on your new hobby and the internet makes that easy. Charity shops can be a good source of books too.

Don't forget insurance. It's required in lots of places and cheap enough.

Oh, and enjoy yourself on the water!

Thank you ALL some really fantastic advice.

Still waiting for someone with a lot of knowledge to say come then I can do it.

I think I would probably want to go on lake district first just to get the feel of things.
