Hi there, budding sailor here, have been browsing through various threads and am now feeling brave enough to post!

We are just about to start refurbishing our Kestrel 22, would love to hear from other owners and anyone from our local area, we are lucky enough to have the Blackwater right on our doorstep and spent most of the weekend moored on a friend's boat in Pyefleet, spent a very nice few hours at the Colne Yacht Club, first visit. First proper sailing trip for me! Enjoyable although had to abandon ship at first light in favour of the tender, to get away from copious male snoring!

Looking forward to getting to know this forum, and to hopefully hearing from any other Kestrel owners.

How 'big' a refurb? Where are you based etc. I think there are a couple of Kestrel owners about here from time to time but there are a few other wooden boat owners maintaining the standards

Reasonably big - Kes is actually a GRP boat rather than wood so it's not *too* scary, but still quite a lot of (mainly internal, cosmetic) work needed; completely new headlinings, new escape hatch, re-paint throughout, new cushions, flooring replacement, new wood all the way round outside as the sides got completely smashed trying to snug her into our drive. No new electrical or kitchen equipment needed as got lots leftover from old boat (Halcyon 27). General scrubbing and re-painting to the keels, and general scrub up and polish etc.

Thankfully all the rigging was done to a very good standard by the previous owner. Mast is sound, currently nestling in the trees in our garden. Engine is ready to go thanks to husband fixing it but he is now debating whether to put it back (Original Vire engine) or buy a different one...leaving that to him! He's in charge of anything engineering wise as that's his trade.

We are based in Rowhedge although spend most of our time in Mersea, and Kes is moored up in Rowhedge/our driveway. Here she is being pulled out, poor girl:

welcome to the forum.

never seen a boat hoist like that, is it a skip lorry...lol

heather and steve

Thank you, and yep, you guessed it! Luckily we are very good friends with the owner and he's pretty easy going about what his lorry gets up to. Am just hoping the drop back in is a bit kinder than the pulling out.
