Hi Folks,

Just want to say Hi, just purchased my first boat:

1998 Fletcher Arrowflash Mercury 75HP :D

Can't wait to try her out, I'll be using her mostly in and around the Menai straits (where my dads sailing yacht is lying) and up in the Conwy estuary......give me a wave if you see me.

It'll be used mostly for wakeboarding and watersking.

Any tips/advice would be most welcome

Jase

Congratulations, sounds good.

Be warned that a number of extremely disreputable forumites infest these waters. In particular, keep a look-out for the Ynys Mon Pizza Purveyor, a flybridge mobo with a 50-a-day fag habit, a stop-go slow motion craft, constructed almost entirely of matchsticks, an ancient Westerly, skippered by Santa Claus and a small Peche Promenade motor boat, run by a military type and almost entirely uncontaminated by fish.

You are standing into danger :D

unfortualty not, she saw the light and got out :D

First question i have if i may:

Boat insurance.....any recommendations?

30yr old.....
First power boat
I would assume high risk category?

I am looking into the RYA Powerboat level 1 to hopefully see if this brings it down a little

I do have a bicycle . . .

Enjoy your boat, Jenko~H2O, but please keep clear of swimming beaches, channels, moorings & anchorages when towing toys. That sounds as tho you can't go anywhere, but there are lots of places with sheltered water & few other water users, especially with SW'ly winds.

And JHR, congratulations on a finely observed precis of the dodgier characters in the area, but your description of me could apply to half of the yotties in the straits.

Don't bother with PB1 - it is really for kids aged 8-12. Go and do the 2 day PB2 course. If yoyu ask that nice man "Kwakers" who frequents that area you will be OK!

Welcome to the madhouse.

You should have a lot of fun with that outfit, but how are we going to give you a wave if we don't know you? You neen to look up all the forumites in the area, oh and bring a bottle (or 2)!
PB2 as said, Kwackers is yer man. You'll learn a lot of invaluable local knowledge too. Keep away from anchored and moored boats and be courteous to other boaters and you'll be well received.
Good luck and enjoy!

Glad you didn't include us in that gang of reprobates, we're the more sensible chapter in the area ;)

Welcome jenko!
That's a good rig you've got for watersporting in the Strait.
Plus loads of other stuff
Yep, as Philiz and Solitaire pointed out it's PB2 for You!

You will find the Strait more than the Conwy estuary has best water for skiing and stuff, more sheltered most of the time.
Lots of watersports go on above the bridges in Conwy but only a couple of hours either side of high water.
Anyway if Dad has a yacht in the Strait you probably already know that

Plus you will have probably seen the decent slip at Menai.
The Strait is a great place for PB2, everything to do with tides and bouys etc is there to sample.
Plus loads of places to develope your boat handling skills.

Luckily you have had some real good advice already about the 'Types' that frequent here and the Strait so at least you will be Almost ready for the inevitable boarding party/ p%ss taking and general all round 'critisism';)

OK, PB2 will be great for you, give me a PM if you want to go ahead with that anytime.
But more importantly, I feel you may need My protection and 'locals' knowledge, the drinks cabinet on a Fletcher is not that big.
'Someone' needs to help you in that direction.
Incorrect distribution of the contents could cause mayhem and triple your boating expenses:eek:

Insurance, couple of tips.
Shop around.
Ask questions about the boat and trailer being insured whilst being towed and how much the 'excess' may be
About cover for the outboard if you hit a submerged obstacle.
Mind you, if you come out with me I can show you were all the dodgy bits are cos I,ve hit em all:eek:
DON'T mention you may be fratenising with anyone else on here or the Strait except Me, that plus PB2 will give you a huge discount I reckon:D

Anyway, expect to pay about 200 quids I reckon!

jhr, you got any power steering fluid left?;)

A little bit, but I'm keeping it for myself. I think we have the steering fluid reservoir equivalent of a slow puncture, so I'm topping up from time to time but am also on the lookout for some magic gunk to bridge the gap.

Besides, even if I don't need it for replenishment, even us southern softies get thirsty, occasionally :)

Has it got a yellow cap with power steering fluid written on it or a pic of a steering wheel?

If so you have to put power steering fluid in it. But not too much or it will overflow and make a mess. Alternatively you could leave it alone, but it will make a funny noise and ultimately go bang.

I'd personally put a bottle of that stuff called power steering fluid into the bottle with the yellow cap on it that says power steering fluid, or it may have a piccy of a steering wheel, or may be even be oily black. I'd be careful not to spil it tho, cos it will make the bottle and cap go an oily black colour. That's if its not already.

That may cure the noise, but it may not stop the leak. I'd look into that leak if I were you, that's if you want to stop putting power steering fluid into the bottle with the maybe yellow cap with a logo of a steering wheel or "power steering" printed on it. See?

That's what I'd do. :D

Jenko. Beware your cooler box, there be beer monsters in the Menai.
