New YM Magazine

I thought the YM was a very good one this month (and printed OK ;-).
The comprehensive article on use of Google Earth etc to support navigation in areas where charts are based on very old surveys was very interesting - particularly if you look at the survey dates on many sections of Scottish charts.

Though still don't understand how the Editor has failed to write anything at all over 6+ months on the Oyster structural keel failure and capsize - seems dereliction of duty whilst supposedly "on watch".

On another note, I have just had a pm from a new user (no posts on the forum) asking for my address so she can send me a magazine. Can we have this user deleted, it is clearly a scam.

The post was sent by Pippa, our editorial assistant, she was asked to contact everyone on here by Kieran, the editor.

Not being one to frequent the forum she registered just for the purpose. It was genuine, so thank you to those who replied to her request with abuse.

She didn't email me.

As Vyv's explained, it's in next month's edition which came out last month . . .

Great, eh? You need to put a cold towel on your head before trying to understand magazine cover dates. I think Douglas Adam called this, or something like it, bistromathics.

It's fun to imagine publishers working in a parallel universe where the clocks are set to different times, and the calendars to different dates, from the world that everyone else inhabits.

I wish they would just do the obvious (to me) thing and issue thirteen mags dated January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, Southampton, October, November, December.

Which month are you currently on? June? I gave up trying to work it out years ago...

It is claimed that a Loganair pilot was once reprimanded after a customer complained about his announcement: "Ladies and gentlemen, we are now on the approach to Stornoway Airport, so please fasten your seatbelts, return seats and tray tables to the upright position and remember to set your watches back by two hundred years."

If it's confusing for you, think how it is for us...this week it's April, next week is May, when I'm starting my actual sailing season I'm mid way through it on the magazine, by July it's September, in August we're planning the Christmas issue, and working on it at just after the Southampton boat show!

We're putting a magazine out every 4 weeks.

Am I missing something? Newspapers marked Tuesday are sold on Tuesday (even though they're written in advance). Those who produce them don't require the buyer to go in to the newsagent and say 'It's Tuesday, therefore . . . let me see . . . I need to be buying a newspaper labelled Friday, because Thursday's will be yesterday's (Monday's)'. When we get our salaries in February, the payslip won't say 'July' on it. When I get the 1530 from Euston on a Monday it isn't the called 'the Tuesday 2137'.

Can't a magazine publisher just produce a mag that goes on sale around 1 February that has a cover that says 'February' on it? If they want to produce more than one a month then perhaps they should be missing the month off and serial number them through the year - but I wouldn't expect to find 2019 edition 6 for sale in February 2016.

Don't the magazine publishers themselves think what they are doing gives the impression that they have a tenuous grip on reality?

I actually thought the the Match issue ( available February 5) was really interesting however whilst I was waiting for my grand daughter to finish her Worthing dancing class some lovely person nicked the magazine (whilst I purchased a cup of tea) before I even had the chance to delve deeply into the many stimulating articles !

Newspapers all come out on the same day, magazines come out on different days during the month.

Magazine on sale dates are staggard for a number of reasons, the most obvious being something as simple as making sure all the magazines can be assigned print slots evenly throughout the month.

As for the issue dates dates, one of the most common reasons I hear is that it was at some point to get the jump on the opposition or vice versa. Someone launches the April Issue, and you see May's issue on the shelf which do you pick up? The newer one...

Therefore, it's the reader's fault ;0)

My March 2016 copy of YM dropped through my letterbox on 1/2/16. It's printing clarity is up to it's usual high standard. One bone of contention, the magazine is now so thin, maybe I should have said "fluttered" through the letterbox.

It seems I have lost touch, and I'm sure many would agree :)

But I went into the local newsagent today (Northern Beaches Sydney, a significant centre for yachting), expecting to see Feb YM on the shelves. The most upto date issue is December, '15 for both PBO and YM. Possibly everyone subscribes to the digital edition, but I doubt it. I do not expect any response - but it would be interesting to know how digital compares with the printed version - in terms of popularity. My mind set says older readers prefer the hard copy - but as this forum appears to be frequented by a relative large number of senior members (the recent poll was quite interesting) it looks as if my mind set is wrong.

Of the poll - does that mean there is a dearth of younger yachtsmen - of they simply do not frequent the Forum?

The topic has been covered previously. PBO editor apologised for the omitted article. It is in the March edition (which came out in January :ambivalence:)
Parts of this thread are very reminiscent of the two Ronnies sketch asking the question before last. As is the production dates of magazines
