On southern news last night there was something about a new yacht haven opening on the South coast of IOW?? I wasn't really paying attention. Was I halucinating or can somebody enlighten me.

The heat must be getting to you. The building of this yacht haven was announced some many months ago, and yes, the BBC did announce it's opening yesterday.
Unfortunately the BBC (wonder what the first B stands for?) couldn't afford any pictures, so showed archive shots of open coastline instead - very informative.

Why not just hollow out the middle of the whole island? great marina then, with stacks of berths.

Re: Ventnor Marina

Thanks for the link, at least I know where it is now.

According to the report is was "officially opened" this week but as maxi says the pictures were of a beach (presumably Ventnor before the marina was built) so more than that one cannot tell!

Re: Ventnor Marina

Brillo!! I can see Cherbourg from there!! 56miles to inside the Grand Rade! All that faffing about with tidal gates at the Needles first thing in the morning is gonna be a thing of the past.

Don't hold your breath, it is small and it dries. Have a look here:

There was talk a while back of a pontoon and some buoys, but I think it will be generally populated by the local fishing boats. Been away this week, when I get hold of the local rag I will look to see if there is anymore info.

Re: The \'finished marina\'

The pictures proudly conclude with 'the finished marina' - no pontoons, no landing, nothing except 2 rock groynes forming a harbour. But yes it was officially opened on thursday, and is intended to provide moorings for 'local and visiting yachts' and to 'promote the local shell fisihing industry' . Work continues on site for a further six weeks on 'sea defences'.

It is reported that there will be moorings or piles for up to 6 deep water craft - so it doesn't seem to be anything to get too excited about as a viable stopover on a Bank Hol weelend!

Bet the local fishermen grab them all anyway!

Local Newspaper Report

From todays IW County Press:

"The haven which has been created...alongside Southern Water's bandstand sewage pumping station includes a walkway that gives panoramic views of the town and the undercliff. It has already proved popular with anglers."
and
"...a pontoon, jetty and new slipway would be added to the harbour in the coming six weeks. Deepwater moorings were planned for outside the haven's rock wall and harbour related businesses were being encouraged to open."
and
"...we wish to encourage maximum use of the haven by visiting craft and particularly for local boat owners and interest groups."
