New Westerly Owners Association web site

Most websites seem to have gone mad with password requirements.

I had to email the Hunter Association to find out what their rules are because every single password I tried was rejected for breaking them and the rules weren't given anywhere. It turned out that they too want a long one, but no special characters because they have gone all XKCD about it. Which is absolutely fine, as long as you tell people what you're doing.

I attempted to log onto the new site, but had forgotten my password, so i had them send me a password reset email. Although it said it had to be 12 chars long i ignored that and used one less than 12 digits. This was accepted.

As for the new forum, i appreciate that folks are doing their best, but i think it's pants. What's wrong with the YBW style format, what's with all of this hashtag bollox ?

If one of my websites had numerous spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and broken links, I'd be pleased to be alerted.

I'm sure there are spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. A lot of the content has been pulled from the previous website and we don't have the resources to proof 600 pages. But broken links is a puzzle. I've just used www.brokenlinkcheck.com which is only reporting 4. Of those 1 is in a plugin we have no control over and the over 3 are in in member supplied content for adverts. So not too bad I think.....

It's a real shame that the WOA isn't prepared to proofcheck at least the main pages of its website; I'd have thought that those involved would take a personal pride in getting the website as good as possible for the membership. It doesn't take long to read through a few pages and correct them. I quickly glanced through and found lots of mistakes, such as:-

merchantise instead of merchandise
comercial instead of commercial
different to instead of different from
Deutchmark instead of Deutschmark
Evinrude's instead of Evinrudes
in-boards instead of inboards
ssociation instead of Association
waters edge instead of water's edge
Earl's Court instead of Earls Court
traveling instead of travelling
Owners Association instead of Owners' Association
Queens Award instead of Queen's Award
its' instead of its
Beginings instead of Beginnings
FAQ's instead of FAQs

Your blind faith in brokenlinkcheck.com is touchingly complacent. On the Privacy Policy page there's a link to your own website at www.westerly-owners.co.uk (the old address). There's a link to the Information Commissioner at www.ico.gov.uk (which doesn't exist). There's another link to the Information Commission at https://ico.org.uk/concerns/0303 123 1113 (which returns a "Page not found" message). On the Forum Rules page there's a link to the WOA Members Area (sic) at http://www.westerly-owners.co.uk/login.php (which doesn't seem to exist). And there are numerous email addresses giving @westerly-owners.co.uk (the old website address), you may have kept this URL for emails but it's confusing to say the least.

The privacy policy is here: https://westerly-owners.uk/privacy-policy/

It may contain incorrect text, I've accepted that, but it contains no links. You can click on link. They're blue.....

Oh, that's rather pedantic. I used "link" because the text refers readers to a website address. Some are hyperlinks in blue, some aren't, but it doesn't alter the fact that some of the website addresses are wrong.

Look, I was trying to help you by highlighting some of the issues which need sorting. But it's obvious you don't want any help and don't appear to care if there are errors on the website. I reckon WOA members deserve a better attitude from those responsible for the website.

amen to that. Hostility isn't any way to run an enthusiasts group.

If you like I have some time on my hand while waiting for a weather window , I could correct the spelling mistake for free .

Sorry you'll have to point me to where I've been hostile....

in your particular case hostility is not the correct word chap. But you are being a tad over defensive to people who are genuinely trying to help. I can imagine that task has been a mammoth one, so when people don't like certain aspects, or point out errors and omissions than must be somewhat irksome to you. However those pointers are still valid and should be accepted with grace, and acted upon if you feel it necessary.
Just another bad vibe that led Karen to resign her membership. It's supposed to be a fun hobby/lifestyle. The posts on here have I think without exception been in the spirit of helping and constructive criticism. Sometimes that is hard to take with something that has been a huge undertaking, but there it is.

I welcome all constructive criticism....the stuff about un-broken links was particularly illuminating.....

yes the thread has been "educational" in a cautionary tale kind of way. Plenty of cliquey loyalty sure to make any newcomers or potential members have a change of heart

"...As for the damning with faint praise or objective criticism brigade maybe they should try another more suitable backwater.

Its a friendly group for a defined interest and they do a great job."

It is just a shame my wife had to spend money joining the association before finding out how things are.

My personal view:

I purchased a Westerly earlier in the year. I joined the association just prior to that in order to get a little further information on the class of boat I was looking at, and everyone I communicated with seemed to me to be helpful. I didn't need to join, but I had narrowed the new ship down to two particular boats for sale, so it made sense to me. I'm perhaps not a stereotypical Westerly, and I don't really go in for all the organised formal stuff. However that's my choice, and the amount of material including the Yearbook and Westerly History I received as a new member was well worth the membership fee and also interesting.

My view is that the old website was a little clunky and it was time to look at refreshing it and to me it looks fine and usable, with perhaps one or two tweeks being required, and a run through with a spellchecker/fresh pair of eyes. Not that I'm one to talk as there will be plenty of grammatical errors in this post, but I know how easy it is to go page blind when checking through content.

Shame about losing the old forum, that had a lot of good content, I'm aware that copying over from one system to the other is not always straight-forward or even possible without many, many hours going in to the project.

So in essence thank you to all those involved in the site update, it is appreciated by myself as a useful resource and I hope that amendments can be completed to most peoples satisfaction.

The old forum is still available in a read-only state so nothing has been lost.....

Nigel

The old web site may still be available, but access is being blocked by the information message of the new web site. You need to stop the blocking by this message so the information can still be read.

I also did a google search on a thread I created and it shows the link on the old web site, but brings up the same information message.

If you do not believe me, do the test yourself.

OMG, they're arguing with each other now! What a fiasco.

You really have an axe to grind. Nit picking about spellings that had been on the old web site, which you never looked at. Comments about links that were web addresses copied from the old web site. but had been cancelled by the web site owner.

The amount of work to launch this web site has been vast and done by a small handful of people. What is so surprising as you used to own a number of Westerly's.

I only posted about how the old forum is not visible so it can be resolved. This allows everyone to see they are not alone in not finding the old forum information.

Just had a message from Nigel to say the old forum is now visible. I have checked this and it is correct.

The change has only taken 2 hours. I wonder how many other owner association websites would get changes made as quickly.
