I went down to the boat yesterday to check up on a newly fitted Webasto Airtop. I noticed 3 things and wondered if this was normal.

1. The hot air smells like someones dirty garage. I ran it all evening but the smell continued. The unit has been installed in the cockpit locker, so I'm presume its sucking in the smelly air from there. Is this a normal place to install the unit.

2. There's a loud clicking noise (every 3 or 4 seconds). I traced the noise next to the diesel tank, to what I'm guessing is the part that sends the diesel to the webasto unit. Is this clicking noise normal? its bloody annoying

3. Does anyone have a heatmiser timer unit? and have they been able to figure out how to use it? I'm a techy but the unit makes absolutely no sense, and the one page instruction manual is pretty dreadful. I can turn the heating on manually, but setting the timer is impossible.

Would appreciate some advice :)

Thanks

Yes, had the 5500 installed last year. It smelled strongly for ages, but eventually it went away. It was the heatproof 'bandage' around the exhaust and it was burning something off but is fine now. Totally agree about the Heatmiser - what a sod to operate. The frost-stat is brilliant though.

The ticking is the fuel pump and delivered a very strictly measured amount of diesel per 'click'. We are moored on the Norfolk Broads and to comply with the BSS, and they had to install it with copper tubing which carried the noise. Elsewhere, they use plastic tubing which is much quieter. Apparently putting several loops in the pipe (like a pig-tail) quietens it down a bit. The pump should be rubber-mounted to absorb some of the noise. You do get used to it, but it's a bugger at 3am when it cuts in.

My air intake is from the outside, through one of the engine vents.

Cheers guys.

Can tell its a monday morning when I can't convey the clicking is coming from the fuel pump :) Yep they're copper pipes, ah well I'll get used to it as you say.

I do recall the guy who installed it mention there was something that needed to be burned off, but thought a couple of hours of running would have sorted it out.

Good to hear I'm not the only one who thinks the Heatmiser is a pain. Sure I'll get the hang of it soon.

1) Whilst it is acceptable to mount it there is is wholy unacceptable to draw air for recirculation from there, route a length of duct to an intake grille to take in air either from the outside or from the cabin, or a combination of the two with a diverter valve. If the air is being traken from the same space as the exhaust is routed then it is not a good install at all as that goes to safety. All that said the current smell just be the newness and handling detroitous burning off.

2) Al;most certainly the dosing pump which is a slolenoid type and clicks with each dose of fuel, if loud it is possible without too much effort to tone it down a bit.

3) I have operation instructions for the Heatmiser, (The Webaso ones differ from the standard Heatmiser TN1 operation) but those should have been left with the rest of the pack along with all warranty documents etc. If you PM me an email address I can send you a PDF, though the installer should really be doing that.

Hi David,

Thanks I will check where the air recirculation is coming from with the guys who installed it.

I've just found a better instruction manual online on the heatmiser website, it makes a bit more sense than what was on the Webasto literature. Thanks very much for offering to send it.
