does anyone have a DSC Radio with AIS that can be plugged into an NMEA 2000 network? Can you recommend a particular one? Can you buy one from the US? They are a lot cheaper even when you add on postage and duty. perhaps they are not compatible? Thanks in advance as always!!

I have a Garmin VHF300i. It seems to work well, and seamlessly integrates with the plotter via NMEA2000. AIS targets display properly, and you can make a radio call to a target instantly if required.

A nice feature of the 300i is that it's a "black box" set - all the electronics are in a box hidden away, and you just control it from a handheld mic. I'm just in the process of adding a wireless handset to it.

They're about £500 in the UK, and about $800 in the US, so I don't think you'd save much by importing.

There was another thread only last week from someone who had a VHF bought in the USA. Turned into a bit of a RTFM session to be honest, but all sets I've met with can be switched from the USA channels to the International set (as used in Europe). What you don't get are the "private channels" used in the UK for communication with officials at yacht club events and to call marinas - to be honest, those most used by the majority of sailors. Sadly there are also differences between countries within Europe, so that for instance the channel used to call a NL marina is not allowed on a UK sourced set as at home it is used for official purposes only...

The Lowrance Link-8 and Simrad RS35 have AIS and NMEA2000. Both available in UK and US. They are versions of same radio but the Simrad can have a remote mike added. I have neither myself as I did not need NMEA2K.

I bought an RO4800, bought it. ecause it was cheaper than the Standard Horizon. It does what it says on the tin. I used the nmea output with OpenCpn to show the AIS on a laptop. It worked great going across the channel. I now have a vYacht Wifi repeater connected to it which outputs the AIS to my Ipad or anything else within a 100 mtrs!
SH have now brought out a VHF with a GPS in so the original one is about as cheap as the RO4800 was. It has one feature that I wish I had, choose the ship showing and press call and it does it. Mine you have to write the number down and input it to call.

I bought an RO4800.

The Radio Ocean RO4800 only has NMEA183 not NMEA2000 though. Good radio otherwise by all accounts.

Yes, no NMEA2000 on that one. It's also worth noting that both the Standard Horizon GX2100E and the newer GX2200E which someone recommended don't have NMEA2000 either.

Incidentally, the Lowrance Link-8 and Simrad RS35 you mentioned are also the same basic radio as the B&G V50.

Yes I did read it, so £200 and a bit of fiddly wiring for the NMEA0183.

I have the RO 4800 and mine is connected to my nmea2000 via an Actisense . Adds £100 to the bill though. Radio came before nmea 2000 on my boat so had little choice but connecting was a doddle. Thanks. Alan

When I interfaced it to a serial port it took a bit of fiddling but wasnt difficult. I also noticed that when I was interfacing it with the vYacht wifi that I could choose what type of Nmea it outputted.

I got it working ok connecting to my Mini Ipad using http://www.digitalyachtamerica.com/index.php/en/products/software/iais/product/106-iais-app-for-ios
There are two inputs, 38400 for my Ais and a slower one for my instruments. It mux s them I believe.

PS As you can see from the vYacht website you have loads of options so the person who made sniffy comments about Nmea 2000 needs to do some more research! As pedantic as he is he also needs to realise that none of the radios
"plug" in to a network. They all need some wiring to get them "attached" to whichever network is used!
