Need to replace turbo's and exhaust elbow on a 2003 Targa 52. These are the volvo type elbows.
Be interested if any forumites know why this was changed on later T52 models. Picked some comments about water getting into the engines on the earlier models but could also be due to the high cost of the volvo elbows.

Also trying to source aftermaket turbo's which are cheaper than the volvo ones but none seem to be in stock. Any ideas of who would have them in stock are welcome. Turbo's run fine but on inspection are showing signs of being porous and leaking coolant into the exhaust stream. small droplets of dried coolant are visible according to my volvo tech. Replacement is being advised to prevent damage to the engine if large leakage occors.

Think of it another way, the original turbos and elbows have done 16 years, they have done pretty good in a very aggressive corrosive atmosphere.

My boat a 2001 with VP 63p's I changed out the elbows in 2016 and the turbos this year because they were leaking exhaust gas back in to the charge air coolers.

Turbos VP do a core exchange programme, and VP parts if fitted by a VP service dealer carries a two year parts and labour warranty.

The VP parts supply chain is very good I got turbos in a week and an exhaust manifold in a week.

I personally prefer to fit OEM parts

Some interesting feedback thanks.

Indeed the volvo elbows lasted wel if still original but what I like about the fabricated ones apart from the cost is that if they leak it is to the outside and not to the inside where saltwater runs back into the turbo where you cannot see it.

Had found the turbo diesel UK peeps but they said 3 months waiting time. In the mean time Aquatom who surveyed the boat had a look at the pics and he is convinced it is just condensation gone orange with the rust inside the elbow.

I get you with the OEM security and warranty but with the case of Markc's elbows he had manufactured they were far superior to the OEM ones and were a fraction of the cost. Most parts are out-sourced so it's worth doing some homework as to who the "OEM" manufactures are.

Stainless does not always last longer in the marine environment, all materials are compromised in different ways.

My stainless exhaust bends lasted 15 years, the injection bends were furring up with corrosion but had not failed, but I changed them out anyway.

A boat we look after with VP D12’s in of the same age as the OP, we have changed out the Halyard SS injection bends twice due to corrosion, so it’s on set 3.
