New to the East Coast

Ahoy all,

Just dropping a quick note to say hello - my partner and I have just bought our first boat and she'll be kept on the Crouch at Burnham. My partner has been sailing most of her life, I started a little later in mid-30's and have now been sailing for 10 years and thought it was about time I started learning about boat ownership and maintenance as well, so have taken the plunge and bought a Sigma 362 - although we're buying it off my partner's father, so we know the provenance and history. More importantly, there's a ton of stuff to learn from him in terms of looking after the boat - steep learning curve ahead! Some of you may know him, Pat McArthy, he's been on the East Coast for a while.

Anyhow - hope to see some of you on the water, we went into the water a couple of weeks ago but the craziness of life means we haven't had time to get her sailing just yet. Hoping for a shakedown day sail this weekend if all works out!

One quick question - have got my sister, brother in-law and small child coming down to the boat in a month or so - probably won't happen that often, so I'm not keen to splash out for a one-time use infant lifejacket - does anyone know if there's somewhere that might hire or lend one out?

Congratulations. We had a look at a Sigma 362 last year and were sorely tempted. I've heard nothing but good things about them.

I don't know of anywhere that would lend you a children's life jacket, but Decathlon should do them at a reasonable price. If you're going far, I'd be more concerned about stopping the kiddie falling in at all once you're underway. You need to think about how long it would take you to get back to them if they fell in and how you would get them back aboard - all highly undesirable. I would look at sourcing a harness for that. Maybe the child's parents can help out on cost? After all, it's for them.

Indeed - they'd definitely be harnessed underway - but I'd probably keep them in a lifejacket if we were moored and pottering around on deck / in the cockpit. Decathlon is not a bad idea - thanks.

Welcome to Burnham and to this forum.

I live in Burnham, and we keep our old Comanche catamaran on a Priors mooring (though she's in Bradwell marina at the moment, till my broken collar bone heals).

I've got a small child's lifejacket that you're very welcome to borrow: I bought it new, for a day sail, last year. Worn once, never been wet.

Do you want me to dig it out to check the size?

Have they found a buyer for Prior's yet - was looking at all kinds of options for swinging moorings around there, but ended up going to the Royal Corinthian.

Hope your collar bone heals in time to get out for some summer sailing!

He's 14 months old, not entirely sure of weight but he looks pretty average for his age so would guess around 10kg - but will find out...I've got an offer as above so will check back in later...

Ours is 10 to 15kg.

As the pic shows, it doesn't have a built-in harness, if that's critical (we only went out for about four hours, for a lovely potter up the Roach, on a perfect, sunny day, with gentle Easterly to blow us back to Burnham).

If it might be useful, pick it you're welcome take it to try for size.

I believe Priors is under offer, but I have no idea how accurate that information is, or what stage any planning application has reached. As someone who has sailed through Burnham since the 60's, it's sad to see Priors go the way of Tucker Brown and Kings (with Rice and Cole, Petticrows and the Crouch YC all also in the firing line). Ah well ... things can't stand still!

How old is the child? I was going to list on the forum a child's crewsaver lifejacket the "got everything" model with foam, air inflation, crutch straps and harness for ages 2,3,4 for £20.
