Hi
I am in the process of buying a first boat but the chart plotter screen is failing.
It’s a raymarine C70
Apparently this is common and is analogue so I need to replace it with an analogue alternative otherwise all other equipment that is functioning well won’t connect to it ( radar Bidata auto pilot etc )
Can I simply replace this unit with an alternative like a c80 or c120 or is that not viable .
Anyone know of any common fixes / good repair people for the screen, I am told the issue is intermittent
Options and help here please would be most welcome
Thanks in advance

The C80 and C120 will do as a replacement as along as you can fit them in the boat . There are normally a few for sale on the eBay but they are old units now and they are failing . A lot of people are up grading to newer units if you can afford the up grade.

C70 is very old so I would not really consider repair. There are repair companies out there but Raymarine for example will no longer support it.

The newer plotters ( even the current generation ) will connect to autohlems, bi data etc either natively or using an adapter.

The main thing that drives your choise is the radar which becomes expensive to buy and tricky ( the wires never pull through) to install.

If the boat has radar AND it works then you will be limited to plotters that will support the radome you have. The best place to buy them is Ebay.

I changed a C70 on mine to a C wide and that did need a new radar. If you look up the radome you have on the Raymarine site they usually give a table ( that can vary by serial number) as to what plotters it is compatible with. I am pretty sure you wont be able to go beyond "C" to for example C Wide.

Depending on the boat and how long you want to keep it, you would likely want to upgrade the C70 at some stage anyway.

The screen is quite small and the unit being old doesn't talk to modern apps like the Navionics, meaning you have to manually add waypoints which is a pain in the backside.

Before upgrading to a larger version of the C Series which as others have said will replace just fine, do strongly consider getting a newer model. Whilst you may need to change the radar if you have one, you may well find you've a nicer modern system to play with.

Another interim option is an ipad with the Navionics App. I have also used that over the last 2 seasons and it works really well.

Hi,
Is the issue vertical coloured lines?
If so, you may find that taking the unit apart, and reseating the ribbon cable to screen helps.
This was the case with mine, and it’s been fine since.
Good luck!
