I want to renew the tiller on my boat, What type of wood is best to make it from? as I can make it myself if I knew which wood. Thanks.

I have just made a new tiller for my Evolution 25.
I used ash and mahogany to laminate it in 6mm layers and used Balcontan glue to make it stay together.
This gives a pleasing stripey effect.
The root of the tiller is about 4" x 4"
I am very pleased with the result.

I made one for my boat from a solid piece of ash. You can't get the same sort of curvature as with a laminate but if a fairly straight tiller will do, then it's very easy.

made one last year from american maple and mahognay as these were available looks good and is strong. Used bog standard evostick PVA glue (blue bottle) on the advice of a friend who is into woodworking and again it seems ok.
