We (EA) are launching this new web page from 1 Dec. It shows our advice regarding river conditions reach by reach. It is being updated from now on 7 days a week but there may still be teething problems.
Enjoy and we welcome any feedback as to how useful you find it/suggestions for further improvements.
The web page is at www.visitthames.co.uk/riverconditions

thank you I think this is great and will be monitoring it.

However I have a more instant version, I look out my window!

Will be interesting to see the comments that start flowing, make yourself a cup of tea and pull up a chair!

That looks useful. Would you mind explaining why 'Stream Decreasing' is a problem for unpowered craft?

I ask because I am running the racing at Cookham Reach Sailing Club on Sunday!

Many thanks,
Keith

The long awaited, and ahead of schedule too!
I can see I'll have to get web access on the boat now, SWMBO won't be happy about that.
Well done Angela.

Keith - Our advice on Yellow Boards is that unpowered craft shouldn't use the river as the stream is still stronger than 'normal'. I know clubs have their own methods of deciding whether to go ahead in their specific area though. If you want to discuss your race/local conditions, please contact the Middle Thames Office - I can't recall the number off the top of my head so try this one and they can put you through: 0118 953 5527. Angela

Thats a good start, hopefully more data like actual river level and flow rate can be added later. Actualy knowing the stream condition isn't always very helpful ,the actual riverheight is the important bit. Problem with the simple "normal/yellow/red" is that there are so many variables in between and above.
The Maidenhead Rowing club site still tells you more. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yep! I have always considered heights more important to power craft than flow. I've said it before and say it again, flows on the Thames never even come close to tidal flows on really tight entrances on the coast. Jeez! look at the daily flow at Christchurch entrance and to a lesser extent but still up to 7 knots at Hayling Island.

that's a pretty good start - clean design and legible.

I guess that EA has myriad telemetry stations giving flow / height data. I wonder if many people might "buy in" more to the work of EA if you linked, either directly with"dials" onscreen or indirectly to the stations themselves.

It would give more info, which is not a state secret - honestly ! - to the customers, and the height figs would be especially relevant to experience of river conditions.

Excellent

Angela, Five ***** stars for that, could find absolutely nothing to niggle about on that page, there's even a tab to go to one's area of interest.
The colours make it so easy to fast scroll down / up to the nasty bits.

Getting the whole picture also helps to project what's coming later - "Yellow today, will it go to Red later" type questions.

A great start on it's own and could be a building block for later.

I wonder who's got stuck with updating it, though...

I believe we are at Tedders .... don't know a great deal about it yet as i have been on holiday , back on the 2nd December , so should find out more then.

Does anyone know what is supposed to happen if I subscribe for email updates? I subscribed on the first day but haven't received anything, the web page is certainly updated ok.

Remember how I mentioned teething problems (i think)..... There was an issue with how some of the info on the automated email looked so we stopped it while we sorted it. Problem now fixed so that bit is coming back into action later today. All being well you should get an email after 4pm.
