Hopefully this will be of interest for some of you. I bought a 46ft maxum earlier this year and it was fitted with external carpets on the flybridge which to be honest I wasn't very keen on. I started to do some research on teak decks and found there was a limited amount of info available on the web about styles and manufacturers so I thought I would post a brief outline of the process using my boat as the example.

There would appear to be be two options available to us, DIY or Pro installed. The main difference would appear to be the Pro stuff is welded together and the DIY is glued together, I decided to go the Pro route although you can mix and match. For example you could template the boat yourself and then get the mats made up and then you fit them.

So to continue I decide to do the rear bathing platform, the cockpit, the stairs -both to the side decks and flybridge, the complete flybridge and the foredeck/anchor chain locker.

I have attached some photos of the templating process below

Once I started the process I was thinking about how far to take the decking up the side steps

I decided to take them to the top step and router a channel into the front step as I was having a problem with water ingress under the cockpit cover. Essentially the water runs out of a drain from the Flybridge, down the cover, onto the side deck and into the cockpit. This isn't an issue in its own right as there are drains in the cockpit, but if I leave anything on the steps then they do get wet so I decided to try and solve that issue when i was doing the deck.

The mats are now in the process of being made up so I'll post an update once those are made, if anybody has any questions feel free to give me a shout

I should have said, I'm using Wilks Dek-King which is being installed by MADecking.

I choose the traditional teak with black caulking http://www.wilks.co.uk/Dek-King/Choiceofcolour The other option was obviously whether or not to use a border, in the end i did go down that route and I'm also getting the "Maxum" name and logo inserted in the bathing platform and the boats logo on the cockpit floor and flybridge - The logo will only be the dolphin and diver.

Make sure you sit down when you get the price. For a composite plasticky thing it aint cheap, IMO.

Until now refrained from any of the options. The DIY leaves all and any responsibility on - yourself: From making templates to fitting - including finishing and detailing.

Sorry guys, I'd been involved in other things but back on track with the decking. The mats are mostly made and the logos are ready tomorrow, hopefully looking at the start of the install next week.

Cost wise, I've added bits as we go along and had all the mats fully margined. It's a big area so will be circa £8.5k plus vat, the mats work out in the region of £200- £250 per m2 for anyone costing their own jobs.

Remember, thats made up to a template, I agree real teak is cheaper supply only but you have to cut it to size and install it.

Before I decided on "fake" teak, I looked at a lot of boats with real teak crying out for maintenace.
