Hi !

I need to replace my starter battery as it doesn't hold charge for very long these days and I'm having to rely on the domestic bank to start sometimes !

Engine is a 2003.

Anybody got any suggestions as to type/make as haven't replaced one before !

Best regards,

Eric.

An ordinary car battery will do - get one the same capacity as the original.

Car battery...

As Dick says, get an ordinary car battery. Halfords is a good source of maintenance-free batteries, with a reasonable guarantee. You don't necessarily need the same capacity as the one you're replacing, because many boat starter batteries are over-specified. Remember that you're only starting an engine which, in automotive terms, is tiny.

Most important thing here is to get one which is same size and terminal layout as the one you are replacing so that you don't need to mess about with the cables. Mate of mine just did this but failed to spot that the terminals were swapped and blew his regulator.

Tom

Before buying a new battery, I would try curing the weakness (not unlikely just build-up of sulfat crystalson the plates) with a device called Megapulse.

I have suffered from batteries that did not hold the charge for long directly after being fully charged w/ shorepower - in my case it was the domestic battery that did not perform. I have connected a Megapulse unit through the winter and this spring, for the first time, was able to start and run by Eberspaecher heating on battery only without the help of the running engine.

The batteries are now in their 6th season and have had no other sign of aging.
Main point to check: The battery cannot be cured if it has experienced a mechanical failure or has been short circuited - both of which you can check cell by cell.

The Megapulse saved me some money - don't know the UK importer / chandler, but believe there are some. If not I could point you to a continental chandler who could send some to you (where I bought mine). PM me in that case.

A cheap motor one from Halfords is great, so long as you only use it for engine starting. Just get one with approx the same capacity as the old one.
