It’s amazing how little publicity this has had. Frenchman Guirec Soudée, who first came to fame for spending 5 years sailing round the world solo with a chicken named Monique (including spending 133 locked in the ice in the arctic because he wanted to), has just knocked nearly 28 days off the existing record (122 days, by Jean Luc Van Den Heede 22 years ago). He’s also the first to complete the feat in a multihull. His list of previous exploits include rowing across the Atlantic (twice) and being the youngest solo sailor to navigate the North West Passage.

His book about the voyage around the world with a chicken is well worth reading.

Guirec's arrival interview here in Voiles et Voiliers (Non paywall. hopefully the auto translate browser settings have held): Living on 2-3 hrs sleep, the foil and rudder breakages, the distance covered (37k nm v's VDH's 25k), Cape Horn, how he got here, the Route du Rhum.

Most immediate challenge: putting his Ultim on the tide strafed (but improbably scenic) pontoons of Treguier. Tomorrow Saturday 4.4.26. If anyone is over that way for Easter.

A true Breton adventurer. Chapeau!

EDIT: And, not to forget, between the Monique trip & this RTW wrong way record, Guirec raced the 2024 Vendée Globe. Achieving a 5th, in the daggerboard fleet. Ahead of Violette Dorange….
