new ships radio license

Re: spelling -ieSpell

Just a few people discussing things. There is nothing wrong with trying to spell correctly, and it's only you that's making an issue about it. If you are not interested don't read it.

Re: spelling -ieSpell

The trouble with spelling checkers is that they don't spot muddles like license instead of licence or the confusion over there, their and they're, which occurs regularly on these forums and there's theres and there's. Whose instead of who's has appeared on here recently. I have not seen hear instead of here though.

They will however spot words like deisil which is currently around and the pluber who used washing up liqiud to detect gas leaks. (Do they have gas leeks in Wales or even in whales?)

Not concerned with how the Yanks corrupt the language. If Miss Dent allows it in Countdown it's OK if she doesn't it's not. That's why I don't use words longer than 9 letters. Another one there; its and it's.

No wonder learning English is so difficult. Think also of the different pronunciations of the letters ough. There is another for my list of words I should be able to spell; pronounce but pronunciation.

Does anyone know the meaning of orthography when it is not in relation to drawings etc?

Re: spelling -ieSpell

Spell checkers help to pick up typing errors more than anything else. Most of us are not trained typists and we tend to look at the keyboard rather than the screen so it's easy to miss things.
The trouble with grammar checkers is that they can't always help with the informal chit-chat that take place here.

This Thread is Wonderful - Not!!

Guy asks question on Reader to Reader Forum

Ofcom - licences etc

Within 3 posts its become an English spelling/grammer lesson

By post 5-6 it gently drifts back to Ofcom but then nose dives into spell checkers - which is best!!!

Poor guy all he wanted was a bit of informed info on radio licences?

But hey - I bet he knows a lot more about spell checkers now than he did before - I wonder if that was his reason for posting? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: This Thread is Wonderful - Not!!

He got the information he wanted, plus some more for free!
Thread drift is inevitable on a forum like this. It's not the first time it has happened and it certainly won't be the last.

I'll bet that even you will have gone off-theme at some time.........come to think of it, you are not talking about radio licences now. You are doing the very thing you are complaining about. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

If I was sinking or in dire need of other assistanse (sic) I dont think I would worry too much about practise or licenses (sic).... well... a well practiced (sic) lifeboat crew would be nise.... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: This Thread is Wonderful - Not!!

That's not the response I was expecting from you Brendan. I thought you would be the one complaining about going off subject. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re somebody else's comment about grammar checkers. I've given up using one. It finds so many mistakes that it takes longer to correct them all than it did to type the original.

Re: This Thread is Wonderful - Not!!

Stephenh, Vic was talking about nouns and verbs - where I come from, that is grammar.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, yes, but he's a dyslexic dyslexic.

Re: This Thread is Wonderful - Not!!

Well....it was really intended as a criticism of spelling pointing out that when talking about buying a licence it is spelt with a c but when talking about having to license the radio it is spelt with an s. Perhaps it was a citicism of orthography!

Re: This Thread is Wonderful - Not!!

the spelling of verbs and nouns - definitely orthography - not syntax and inflexions..
thanks VicS

Re: This Thread is Wonderful - Not!!

A bit OTT considering he simply expressed an opinion which wasn't even controversial. Not necessary.

Re: This Thread is Wonderful - Not!!

I appreciated it to be fair. I feel my English is adequate but I do prefer to try and get it right. I admit to struggling with the verb and noun usage of words such as licence or license.

I have learnt something from this thread, so thank you.

Many thanks for that short cut.
Any idea where I can get a "y" with a circonflex over it - known as a "tor bach" in Welsh ?
Bill Gates does not seem to provide.........or maybe I haven't looked hard enough.
