Halfway across the Solent yesterday, Cowes to Beaulieu, had to slow right down and turn hard to avoid a rib coming straight at me on my port Bow.

Didn't think much of it until I entered Beaulieu river and noticed the same rib just behind me. Had a big flag on it saying "Harbour Master"

Anyways, take a buoy for lunch and a few minutes later the same rib comes alongside for payment of mooring fees. After a brief conversation I mention that I had needed to take avoiding action while being the stand on vessel. Incorrect says he and informs me:

"Vessels going up and down the solent have priority over vessels crossing"

Only posting as he was such an arrogant tw$t and deserves to be shamed.

Good few years back we were doing sea trials in Solent on Cable & Wireless Adventurer, vessel was under command of senior Master off the cable ship fleet. Very similar incident happened with large RIB not sure what organisation it belonged to, too long ago to remember, but in our instance skipper has his 7,000 tonne cable ship head fully engaged and stood on, calling the RIB on VHF telling him in no uncertain terms that he was the give way vessel.

May I suggest that you formally inform the beaulieu HM. Whilst most people on these boards might have the experience to evaluate this version of the colregs if told, many new skippers may not. Solent has lots of charter boats and can imagine new skipper, fresh DS ticket in his hand being told this by an official and then acting on it and having a very nasty experience.

I think I may have already encountered some other people he's spoken to...

From the yachtsman's guide the only reference I can find is:

1. Whenever possible, avoid sailing
in commercial shipping channels,
especially in poor visibility. If it is
absolutely necessary to use these
channels then observe Rule 9 of the
COLREGS by keeping to the starboard
side of the channel and crossing, at
right angles, only when this does not
impede the passage of a vessel that
can safely navigate only within that
channel.

Only goes to show why we shouldn't give these peak capped little Nazis more power. When I first started boating, it was largely unburdened by bureaucracy and authority. A harbour master got a dory and if he was lucky a tiny little outboard motor to push it along. Now they've got incredibly expensive fast RIBS, speed guns, hi viz jackets and a whole bunch of new regulations to make boaters lives a misery and all at our cost. Just another example of how the all powerful nanny state is running our lives
