what kind of idiots allow such energy to be unleashed so close to whole families of human beings ? There's not the slightest chance of controlled recovery once the boat becomes airborne.

The boats tend to continue in the direction they were travelling if it goes wrong, but not necessarily the right way up, or as close to the water as the driver intended.

Absolutely, at these sorts of speeds the air speed is enough to make almost anything fly!
You only have to watch the final run of Donald Campbell. He was attempting almost twice the speeeed these guys were.

I remember this day so well. Very sad, if only he had 'elevator' control.

Sadly Mike Fiore passed away yesterday as a result of complications following surgery after the accident shown in Vid 2

Mike will be sadly missed in the Powerboating community. my thoughts are with his family and friends.

Vid 2 I think the throttleman might have been a second late backing off. It was lifting for some time.

With a cat at these speeds you do not lift off to bring the nose back down you Slam the throttles forward, the torque pushes the bow down. If a boat it running opened up and trimmed out with no throttle left, there is nothing left to do. If you pull back on the throttles you lose the torque that is pushing you forward and you kite.

I remember when the Class 1 boats raced in Plymouth. Great pieces of kit. Fantastic sound.

Imagine what it must be like reaching that speed from a standing start in under 5 seconds.

Thanks for that explanation, needs a full set to be able to to that tho.:ambivalence:

Very sad news from Z1ppy, massive loss for the sport and his family. :(
