Unfortunately the Solent is very crowded and a lot of radio traffic. Several ship to ship channels are used by Portsmouth and Southampton port operations, leaving not a lot left for others to use, not a problem if there is not abuse. Do a search on "solent marine radio channels". This is an indication

Added confusion during freak radio conditions when French marine radios can be heard, especially on Ch16.

mmsi number is set to the INDIVIDUAL not the boat, and is given to you on your vhf/dsc licence. You then have to put it on your vessels application for a radio licence.

DSC radios is the governments way of making everyone get a lincence. It is all about accountability/ making money.
Is it poossible for anyone to give us more convincing proof that they have neither a Ship Radio Licence nor an Authority to Operate?? :D
