I need to replace my worn prop shaft - nothing very fancy, 25mm diameter, 1050 long. Has anyone any direct experience of having one machined in the Ipswich area, or is my best bet T. Norris Marine?

A prop shaft is a very simple thing.
Just a bit of SS round bar with a taper & key slot at one end and possibly a thread at t'other. Any decent small engineering workshop should be able to cut a taper.

All very well recommending T. Norris but if you do you need to know the taper... If you don't best to use a local engineer... I've had to have two shafts in my ownership, the first was when I got the boat, and it was bent... The second (at the yard's cost) was because they bent the shaft by having the strop under the shaft....

Agree that it’s a simple engineering job but i had two mates in the last few months get quotes locally that were 3 times the cost of T Norris, I changed mine 2 years ago and found the same. The tapers are standard so just need to tell them metric or imperial from my experience when speaking to them. They have just supplied a 1100mm shaft for my mate for £180 delivered, he was unsure of his measurements so hu just cut the taper off and sent it to them.

I'm afraid that, although tapers are standard the standard differs depending where the shaft last had a new prop fitted. The metric standard is 1:10, fairly universally, but the " imperial" standard differs in N. America (1:16) and UK (1:12). While this summary serves for yacht sized shafts, things vary again for shafts over 6" diameter.

If I were in Ipswich, I would go for one of the Davey family, ideally leaving the old shaft and the prop with them.

Peter.

Thanks all for the suggestions. At the moment I may have tracked down a used but good condition replacement from a local marine engineer but good to have ideas if this doesn’t work out.

Shaft No 1
Used Norris and they did a fine job..but they insisted on having old shaft which I delivered, cost me best part of day fighting my way through London plus the fuel.
They charged me an additional £35.00 + vat to straighten my old shaft so they could "check" the taper then charged me £35.00 +VAT for P&P to get it back..........then overcharged for the whole job into the bargain.
10 days to complete job, they were "busy" apparently.
Shaft No2
Used a local engineering shop at Otterham Quay nr Gillingham. Kent , They charged me £ 140.00 all in inc VAT to do exactly the same job and took half a day to do it when I supplied the shaft.
The prices were for a 1.5" shaft.
Needed a hole for a roll pin at one end and machining the taper/woodruff slot/key and nut thread at the other.
